Is it appropriate to use smiley faces in email/IM at work?

About 50/50. It's ok to use them regularly, but not all the time :) :)

Only on occasion. Sometimes it's needed to lighten the mood.... :)

Re: CPW: :)

  • I very rarely use them but on occasion I will insert a smiley to lighten the mood. I never ever do it to my boss thought, ever.

  • Our office is very small.  So even the boss uses smiley's.  But if it's a serious matter, then they don't get used.

I can't even think of 1 e-mail my co-worker and I have sent that we didn't use one.  But I never use them to a client unless it's one I know personally or we have a close relationship.

  • I tend to do it when I have to be a jerk about something and don't want to. I don't like it if people think I'm always yelling at them (even though I am) so I insert the smiley occasionally. I always struggle with the "is it ok to insert a smiley here??" question. I don't want people thinking I'm dingy and dot my i's with hearts or something! I just don't like having people mad at me so I try to show that I'm still nice, even though they're being stupid.

I use it on the regular when conversing with certain coworkers or my boss though. And FB/GP/personal email is not subject to any rules as I use it ALL the time there. I probably use the smiley too much, but I don't care. :)

see? I just put that smiley there without even thinking about it!! ha!

  • Only with certain people I work with, never to parents, almost always to kids (they have their own school emails - so convenient).

  • I'll use them on occasion with my immediate coworkers, usually in lighter, random, not necessarily business-specific emails.

We're a bunch of young-ish female editors. We all get along, and sometimes when authors are driving us insane, a goofy face is needed to help us not blow our brains out, hahaha!

  • We use them all the time at work and we're a very large corporation. NEVER in an external communication, only internal. I generally don't use them at all in a correspondence with someone I haven't talked to before, but once we're familiar with each other smileys tend to become a norm. Hell, most people use gifs in their IMs.
