What's the protocall on this? (parenting)

We were in doctor waiting room this morning and a little girl (maybe 2?) came over to dd and just hit her right in the head.  I realize 2 year olds some times do this, but I spend all day teaching my 3 year old that we don't hit.  The mother didn't seem to care.  I'm not sure if she saw it, but she definitely heard my daughter say loudly "ouch that baby hit me!!!" and saw her daughter standing over my daughter.  So, is it ok to correct another child if their parent doesn't step it?  I hate to step over the line, but I feel like I should have said please don't hit her.

Re: What's the protocall on this? (parenting)

  • I would first understand it is age appropriate and not be too upset over it. But I find the whole playing at the doctors office weird.  Germs people. Keep your kid next to you.  lol.

but I would have probably told the girl in a nice voice "No hitting" but I wouldn't have touched her or anything.  It would have reinforced to your DD that hitting is wrong, without being that crazy lady.
  • A 2 year old I wouldn't say anything too really. Older kid with no parental involvement I would and I have had to do it in the past.

I would also just explain to my own kid. I would say that the 2 year old is still little and is learning right and wrong. But that you know hitting is wrong, right?

It's hard with older kids. Dd has gotten upset before when kids have done stuff and not apologized. I try to use it for learning for dd. That she feels upset that the kid didn't apologize so that's why we have to always remember to say sorry, etc. it's hard when you are trying to teach them things and others kids are acting the way you don't want them too.

But at that age I wouldn't be that upset about it. Although I would be annoyed at the lack of parenting which seems to happen all too often.

  • I'd probably just say something in a nice tone like "we don't hit" but not make a big deal out of it. The mom may have just missed it. And maybe explain to your daughter that the 2 year old is still little and doesn't quite understand yet or something like that.

  • Thanks everybody!

I wasn't really upset.  Stuff happens.  But, I could see it all over dd's face that she was thinking "hey, if I did that I would be in trouble."  Ya know?  I was mostly just annoyed that this woman was letting her kids do whatever they want in this waiting room and my kid who was playing nicely right next to me gets a random smack in the back of the head.
