Hard Boiled Egg Mistake

I had a weird craving for hard boiled eggs last night. I tend to get them too done so I tried timing the process a little better. Unfortunately, they turned out just a teeny bit shy of where I would have liked them. The yolks were creamy but just a little too translucent for my liking.

This is the point where late night ingenuity went wrong. I thought to myself, hey just put it in the microwave for a little bit that should cook the yolk a bit more. So, being distracted by the Olympics, I put the egg, shell on it and all in the microwave and let it go for 30 seconds. Took it out and it felt quite warm but not hot, so I tapped it with a butter knife to crack the shell. BIG mistake. I basically created an eggrenade that burst sending vaporized egg yolk all over my kitchen. So much for that craving.

    My new favorite word

  • Yikes... I never would have thought it would have exploded.

For perfect hard boiled eggs my mom taught me a long time ago, bring the water up to a good boil, cover the pot and turn the burner off and let them stand for 12 minutes and they are done.

I only did mine for 10 minutes so that's probably the difference. I'll make sure to do them for 12 from now on.

  • I used to always be so nervous about whether they were done until my mom told me to cook them this way but this always seems to work.
  • i also hard boil my eggs like that--but i put them in the cold water and let them heat up with it (it keeps them from cracking) until boiling and then take it off the heat and cover for 10-12 min. it keeps the yellows from turning grey.

I do this too... I should have clarified.

  • Making boiled eggs in the microwave is a bit of a lottery but it can be done,  1st 30 seconds is not long enough and you don't want to do them for more than 1:30 secs or it will explode in the microwave, but you do need to do it for more than 1 minute, when when it''s done let cool down for a couple of minutes to reduce the risk of it exploding in your face. Ok the best way to boil an egg in the microwave is to boil the kettle, put the egg in a microwavable container with the boiling water covering the container is not important, set the microwave for between 3- 3:15 mins depending on how you like your eggs. Experiment a little as eggs can vary in size but the timings will probably be between those times. Enjoy safe microwaved eggs.
