So I know I have mentioned it here a time or two before we left, but DH took me on my dream vacation to New Zealand and Australia. We did a total of 5 Cities (Auckland and Queenstown New Zealand then Melbourne, Carins, and Sydney Australia) The trip was a total of 16 days, 8 different airplanes and almost 48hrs in the air, but it was all worth it.
In Auckland we go to visit Hobbiton which was incredible! The detail is just fascinating and over half of it hasn't even been seen in a movie as of yet
Bag End: The Shire
We then went to Queenstown aka "the adrenaline capital of the world" It was gorgeous, absolutely incredible. If we have to go back to one place and explore more it would be the south island of NZ including Queenstown. This is where the "Misty Mountains" are as well as filming locations for Wolverine and Prince Caspian.
After Queenstown we flew into Melbourne. We actually got to see a Australian rules football game "footy" which was interesting and confusing with no one to tell us the rules but a lot of fun nonetheless. We also did a drive up the Great Ocean Road (12 Apostles, London Bridge) and Phillip Island where we watch the Little Grey penguins come home to there burrows after days in the ocean.
The 12 Apostles (which is now only 8); London Bridge which fell down in the 90s
From Melborune we flew to Cairns which we where we got to scuba dive and snorkel on the great barrier reef. DH and I had never done anything like that before OMG. It was jaw dropping.
Wally the photobombing fish we got to pet; one of the many beautiful fish hiding just below the water's surface
Sydney was our final city by this time we were pretty exhausted but it was still so much fun.
we climbed the Sydney Harbor Bridge and obviously saw the Opera House unfortunately we didn't get to go to an opera while there
At every city we also got to encounter some incredible wildlife the vibrant parrots just sitting in the trees to all the marsupials! We also go to see a platypus, but unfortunately they are nocturnal and were under water so our pictures didn't turn out. Thankfully the only snakes I saw were behind glass. We got to feed Kangaroos and Wallabies and I obviously got to hold a Koala.

Koala: Wombat
Echidna: Tasmanian Devil!!! ( I may or may not of starting hitting DH when I saw the sign for the Tazzie I was so excited)
Grey Kangaroo (stand about 6t not the largest species: Wallabies they are so cute and fun
We are also the proud owners of a didgeridoo, and a boomerang as well as several things Kiwi

It's awesome that you had a great time!
“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"
"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to."
"I don't much care where –"
"Then it doesn't matter which way you go.”

Izzy and Baby A ~ Adorable Punks
I actually live about 30 minutes from Phillip Island, so we're over there all the time. I haven't done the Penguin Parade, but the seal colony at The Nobbies is one of my favorite places.
OP: Glad you had a great time, but I agree with you on the Aussie Rules. I've watched it on tv and live with local interpreters and STILL don't understand what's going on. I've determined I'm just too American for Aussie Rules. Though I am very proud to say I have gotten a handle on cricket.
Oh the nobbies were beautiful. Actually one of my favorite pictures of the trip is from there. (didn't post it) it is sunset and the clouds are so dramatic. You should do the penguin parade. They were so fun! We sat in the VIP seating and we're glad we dis. There were a ton more that paraded near us than by the grandstands. And we were so close!
And my DH now follows the kangaroos AFL team. He wants to learn the rules. Crazy man :-)

I find it interesting he picked the (North Melbourne) Kangaroos. I thought Collingwood (Magpies) was the default AFL team.

Don't worry he already figured out we could get most of the games if we had mls tv but we don't need it so right now I am safe.
We saw the Kangaroos play while there and they are the classic Aussie animal. :-)
