S/A Results

I know these questions are things that I will more than likely be discussing with my RE next year but I would love some opinions from you lovely ladies since January is so far away.

So, even though we aren't moving forward to an RE until next year, my DH went ahead and did the s/a since he had already set it up with his doctor. He hasn't spoke with his doctor about the results yet but the nurse did call him with his numbers so he could give them to me. His count, volume, and viscosity all seem good...from what I have read anyway, but his motility is low (20%-30%). They didn't test morphology at all.

With 20-30% motility, would it even be worth it to try a round of Clomid or would it be better to just move straight on to IUI? I know there are things we can do to try and increase it but this question is going on the assumption that nothing worked.

Also, isn't morphology something that is commonly tested during an s/a?

Re: S/A Results

  • I'm seriously side-eyeing the doc who doesn't include morph on an s/a. That makes NO sense to me. I'd be calling to question that.

I don't really have any advice regarding the motil percentages. It's still entirely possible for it to happen through TI, your chances are just lower (obviously). I don't know enough about that aspect to know if it's "worth it" or not, but it's definitely something I'd want to discuss with an RE to get better clarification on before moving forward with any sort of treatment.

  • yeah... without morphology this is almost useless. To the point that I am frustrated for you for paying for a test that was only done half way

  • Agree with PPs, totally. A S/A without morph isn't a complete S/A. They need to get the whooole picture!

  • How did they not test for morph while they were already testing?? Dumb. Let's say his morph AND motility was down?? That would seriously change your next steps!! There's some supplements he can take (I believe) that can help with low motility, but it'll take like three months to have a full impact. So def have a talk with your doc and see what might help. We have REALLY low morph, but not a prob with motility so I'm only so much help. DH took FertileAid for men from hi-health.

  • I agree with the others.. that's ridiculous that they didn't test everything.

That said, you can do Clomid with IUI, you know. And it might be something to ask your doc about anyway. For example, with my RE, if you do Clomid the office/monitoring price is the same for IUI as it is for TI. We went with IUI simply because it upped our chances a bit more.. might as well get the bang for your buck! But your RE may not do that, so it's definitely something to ask. Either way, I'd probably have the s/a redone and get them to test everything. I would even call the doc who did this one and say "um, you didn't test this so you need to do it again and actually test EVERYTHING and the cost is on you this time". It's worth a shot anyway! GL

  • Thank you for the input, ladies! You all confirmed what I was thinking about the missing morph results. DH is going to call his doctor today to discuss the results and talk about the fact that it was kind of a waste of time and resources to do the s/a without morphology. Maybe if he pushes the issue, he can get another s/a done on the hospital's dime.
