S/O: Wacky Wednesday (vacation spots)

Have you ever traveled to a place that wasn't worth the hype?  Why did you think so?

Re: S/O: Wacky Wednesday (vacation spots)

  • I really, really hate traveling, so, to me, most of the places I've traveled to have not been worth the hype.  Travel in general is not worth the hype to me.

  • The Leaning Tower of Pisa was definitely not worth it. The town around it was teeny tiny, mostly filled with touristy gift shops and things and the tower itself is actually quite short compared to what you see in most pictures. It was also a PITA to get to from our cruise ship.

I'll agree with this. We did a tour of Italy and only stopped there for like an hour. Just enough time to get the typical tourist photos and move on - it was more than enough.
  • Nassau, The Bahamas.
We walked from our cruise ship to Fort Fincastle rather than taking a taxi or an excursion bus. Walking through town is actually a very scary and sad experience.
We also took a water taxi over to Atlantis and toured the aquarium.  I love aquariums and it was pretty impressive, but not for the money they charged.  I'd like to do the water park there at some point I guess, but usually I'm less interested in the cruise excursions and more interested in local culture.  But there's a reason why most Nassau excursions aren't even in Nassau.  It's very run down.

I've stayed at the Atlantis (The Cove, which is an adult-oriented rather than family-friendly) on Paradise Island.  That was a good time.  Nassau itself is meh.

  • Is the Statue of Liberty on anyone's list? We're still deciding if we should go...

Mine is Waikiki. We only spent 2 nights there for the sole purpose of seeing Pearl Harbor (which was definitely worth it IMO) but the congested city feeling with tons of chain restaurants and obnoxious people in character costumes kinda ruins the whole majesty of being on an island. Going there after 9 nights in Maui (also worth it) didn't help...

I agree with this.  I wasn't impressed with Waikiki.

  • I think one of the biggest letdowns for people when they would visit me in LA was Hollywood.  Everyone who visited wanted to see it and I'd warn them that it's kinda gross.  After taking them to see it, they'd all say, "That wasn't what I thought it was.  You were right."

  • Playa del Carmen.

It's not worth it to go to Mexico, IMO. I spent the whole time terrified because it's so dangerous over there. The food was awful, and I got food poisoning. Our beaches are just as nice in FL :)

I HATED Cabo and I know so many people who love it.

I actually enjoyed Waikiki.  It might be because I had zero expectations and spent most of my time at the hotel pool.  My husband got called for a last minute week long job there on a Sunday night.  My birthday fell during the week, so I went with him and we were on a plane the very next morning.  I had no idea what to expect.  Though my favorite part of the trip was renting a car and driving around the island and hiking up Diamond Head crater.  But since I was alone the majority of the time, I stayed at the hotel pool and just swam and read and occasionally went out to the International Marketplace (which I just read is now closed...bummer.
Though...on my birthday I went to a very odd place called Teddy Bear World.  Here's a taste of that joy...

I really enjoyed the State of Liberty! Worth the visit, in my opinion.
  • I'll agree with Nassau.  It was so not worth the hype.  We spent the time in a little bar overlooking the harbor - most of the area outside the major resorts seemed sketchy.

@hydrangeablue, I definitely think the Statue of Liberty is worth the visit.

Completely agree.  We went in February and I wish we had gone somewhere else.  It's just not our scene.

This, and also the Circle Line Tour around the island of Manhattan.  I don't want to circle the island for three boring hours, I want to explore the island itself!

  • Gosh, I love so many of these places!  Playa del Carmen has some amazing diving and I adored Cabo.  I love NYC, all of it.

I'm preparing for the hate as I say Disney.  Now that my kids are school age they beg to go all the time, and I just hate the crowds and the lines and everything about it.  There are tons of fantastic things to do in Orlando but after spending all day at the park I'm too exhausted to do it.

My family took a trip to New Orleans when I was in HS and I spent the whole time bored out of my mind.  I was in that weird age where I was too young for the adult stuff but too old for the kid stuff.  I remember thinking the food was by far the best part.

I went with some friends to Tiajuana when we were in college and felt like we were in the wrong place the entire time.  I didn't feel safe.  But, we were staying with friends in San Diego and decided to go to TJ for a couple days last minute, so we did very little research and probably put ourselves in dangerous situations including being in bad areas that we were just too stupid/naive to know better.

I was really disappointed in Atlantic City, NJ.  I'm not sure what I thought it would be, but it wasn't that.

  • I love to travel!  If I had to say somewhere it would have to be LA.  It was a trip to visit my sister and her family when they were living there.  I didn't really expect much from the city but ugh that place is gross and that is the worst airport I have ever been in.

This.... though I went when I was pregnant, so didn't get the true "Vegas" experience.  I don't really care if I go back, though.

  • Hawaii and Vegas (anywhere in Nevada for that matter). Not my thing.

  • Ditto Vegas. I suppose if you're a partier it's more fun, but once was enough.
My favorite place on earth: The Amargosa Valley.

  • Other than people I got to see there, the LA area holds no part of my heart. It was fine but there are so many other places I'd rather go. Not my scene.
