FFQ....

I've got some random questions that have been floating through my mind the last few days....

- If you're already dilated, will an induction just include Pitocin or will they still try to dilate you more with a bulb or something of the like?  (I plan on calling my doc tomorrow to find out what all is going to happen, but I was curious about others experience.)

- I plan on BFing and pumping.  When is too early to start pumping?  I've heard about over-supply if you pump too early.

I had a couple more but now I forget them.  :(

Re: FFQ....

  • It probably depends on how dilated you are. I was induced twice without the bulb, just pit. I think I was at 3cm both times. My understanding is the bulb is more for if you are having trouble dilating on your own.

  • I think one of the girls said to wait until about a month PP to start pumping that way you have time to build your supply and develop a cycle. and that should hopefully still give you time to develop a freezer stash before you go back to work
  • No help on the dilation since I wasn't dilated at all when they started me on pitocin, but I started pumping at 2 weeks. He had gained back all the weight he had lost and more so his Dr was confident that my milk had come in and he was obviously getting enough. I started pumping because I was losing my mind on no sleep and was hoping that C could take over a few feedings so I could get a bit more rest and W had no problems taking a bottle or transitioning from bottle to breast.
You'll feel like you have an oversupply once your milk does come in, but your body should regulate itself based on how much he's actually eating.

Good point.  I was 2cm as of last Friday and 70% effaced.  I'm guessing that means I'll just be able to move forward with Pitocin.  My OB also made a point of saying that my cervix is "favorable" with regards to an induction.

  • If the baby is low enough they probably will break your water. Baby was too high at the first induction, which is why it failed. I wasn't progressing on my own.

  • When I was induced, I was 3 cm to start with, and they did use a bulb to progress me further.

As far as pumping, I think in general they recommend waiting until your supply is regulated first (so waiting until about 4 weeks)

  • No idea about induction, but I've heard to typically wait three weeks before you start pumping to make sure you're regulated to what LO needs.

That being said, the doc had me start pumping at two weeks with Delilah because she was losing weight and we wanted to try to increase my supply as well as know what she was getting.

And I typically pumped just to build a freezer stash.  In theory it's nice to think that you can pump so someone else can feed them, but any time you replace a normal nursing session with a bottle, you should pump to ensure your body stays regulated to that feeding need.  Plus I was always engorged and uncomfortable if I replaced a nursing session with a bottle and didn't pump.  So personally for me I just found it easier to nurse and then to build a freezer stash, pump at night when he stopped waking as much.

  • You have every right to ask them not to break your water and try the pitocin first. Talk to your OB about that. I'd also guess no bulb since you're on your way already.

I had read to let your supply even itself out for 4 weeks before pumping. That's what I did. I'm not sure you can screw it up too badly, but you don't want to get into a situation where you're making so much that it's hard for baby to latch or making too much fore milk since the hind milk is richer in nutrients.

so tell them that! let them try other things first.  its your body and baby so make them give you options instead of just letting them do whatever they want.

    i'm so excited for you!!

  • I was a little different being induced almost 2 weeks early. I went in with no progression so I had the cervadil placed, waited all day, ate, had a second cervadil placed then slept. Next morning I started pitocin at 9/9:30 when I was 3 or 4 cm dialated. For me, the pitocin contractions started around 10/10:30, my water broke at 11 something, and I had her at 12:16 pm.

She couldn't nurse - had a hard time doing so - so I started pumping. I was able to get what she needed at the hospital, but still had to supplement in between pumpings. She was finally able to latch on sometime 3 weeks later.

  • Oops, I posted too early.

Since you have already progressed, I would think she would start at the pitocin first. You never know how you will progress after that.

I would also see what happens after delivery when it comes to feeding/pumping. Follow your instincts really.

  • I was 3-4cm when they induced me and they never did anything to help me to dilate more.

I wouldn't touch the pump until 4-6 weeks unless you have supply issues and are working with a LC.

I agree with this! I started pumping almost immediately, because of the double whammy of latch problems and supply issues. But I think generally (and if all goes well), they say to wait for at least four weeks.

  • I had cytotec twice and pitocin and my body didnt really do anything. Once they broke my water (I was at a one) I was to 8 in 4 hours. I'd imagine they'll start with just pit and if nothing happens break your water. But definitely voice your opinion. As long as you are good and baby looks good on the monitor I don't know why they would NEED to break your water right away. However, I'm not a doctor. I just play one on the nest.
