Help me pack for Disney

What are some must-haves for our carry on (besides some entertainment for the kids)?  I have heard that you cannot take any snacks into the airport now...is that true?  If so...ugh.  And how about things that we'll need for when we go to the parks?  Of course I've thought of sunscreen, sunglasses...but I'm at a loss as to what else we might need.  B is still in diapers, so we've got to take a diaper bag.  But, I don't want to fill with things that we won't need.  We are staying at the Contemporary, so it won't be too difficult to get back to our room, and we plan on going back to the room each afternoon just for some down time and to break up the exciting day.  We have the Disney meal plan and the park hopper.  Can you give me some tips?  We haven't traveled with both kids ever really, and P was so young the last time we traveled with him, so we're newbies to this.  TIA!

Re: Help me pack for Disney

  • You can bring snacks into the airport, just no liquids (someone correct me if that's changed since October)  we did bring some stuff in my carry on bag for the boys.  If they have ear problems, I would also suggest bringing something for them to chew on (I had jelly beans) during take off and landing.  Liam has a lot of ear issues, so I was worried he would be in pain during the flight.

For the flight, I brought a coloring book and small pack of crayons for each boy, books, and leap pads.  They were surprisingly angelic on the flights (I was nervous, we hadn't flown with them before)

As far as things to pack for the parks, I brought ponchos and glow sticks every day.  We lucked out and had no rain, so we didn't end up using the ponchos, but they were small so it was no big deal to toss them in our bag every day.  And the kids loved having the glo sticks at night, and it saved me from hearing them beg for the overpriced ones that are sold there :)  Aside from those random things, we didn't take much into the parks...water bottles, a few snacks, change of clothes, sunscreen, sweatshirt for mornings/evenings, camera, tissues

  • We've flown to Hawaii with dd so I consider myself a pro now with flying with her! I always pack coloring/activity/sticker books, a ziplock of crayons. We loaded some movies on the ipad and they kept her very entertained and was super easy. We have a pair of folding headphones for her. We had very long flights and brought snacks last year. I hope they haven't changed that! I bring cereal bars, fruit snacks, goldfish, candy like m&ms for treats. I even brought sandwiches and bags of apple slices because we had such long flights. Anyways just some ideas. The Florida flight was short enough not to need much.

At Disney we had a backpack. Always brought our own water bottles, sunscreen, change of clothes for dd, camera. I also brought treat type snacks to give her if we had to wait in long lines. Pez was a good reward and had fruit snacks

  • Oh I usually buy something new for a flight. A short flight I'd just pick up a new coloring book/sticker book or even a little you. I wait to give it to her on the plane. Something new is always exciting!

  • If you go to target or Kmart, in the outdoors/camping/fishing section they sell emergency ponchos for a dollar and change. I buy a bunch of those, so they're light to carry in the parks and when you're done you just throw them away. I find nothing more annoying than lugging around heavy, wet ponchos.

  • Oh!  never thought of ponchos.  Good to know.  And a camera.  Duh.  I'd be the one to walk out and forget mine.  And I'm glad we can take snacks on the plane.  That might've been really, really rough.  Thanks girls!
  • There's also a well stocked Rite Aid in the concourse if you forget any snacks :) I had forgotten gum when I flew in December and was pleasantly surprised at all they had there.
  • I love that Rite Aid! The prices are the same there too.

Does anyone know if you can take the baby food in pouches through security? Or baby food in general? I know the rules about formula/breast milk, but I don't think I've ever seen anything about the purees
  • Whether you can bring baby food or should, that's usually up to the discretion of the TSA agent.  Per their rules, you are allowed (http://www.tsa.gov/traveling-formula-breast-milk-and-juice).

However, in the past year (we did 5 trips involving flights) when traveling with non-infants (11-20 mo and 4 years), I had our Go Go Squeezes confiscated once in Chicago (so 9/10 TSA checkpoints, they went through without a problem) as they said I was taking advantage of the baby food exemption since my children ate more than baby food (in all honesty, I had 2 of them in my purse that I had forgotten about b/c I use them for snacks on the go while we were being tourists so I didn't care to argue).

So, yes, you can take it and they will give you a much less of a hastle if they are sealed (just present it in the gallon bag, they'll take it and swipe it for explosive residue and given it back).  I wouldn't take more than a days worth with you (lest you risk having an argument with TSA).
