Re: PCOS Check In

  • Any updates on your TTC process? Still TTA.

Are you doing anything new to battle the PCOS b*tch? Nothing new.

How are you doing with diet and exercise? Diet is pretty good, and exercise has been good so far this week.  Half marathon is next weekend. :-)

Any suggestions for PCOS friendly meals or workouts? Workouts I would recommend strength training.  Granted the diet has probably been doing a lot with my PCOS, but I have also been doing an hour of Bootcamp class at the gym 3 days a week since December.  My fat % has decreased immensly.  I have no idea if it has made a difference for my PCOS, but I was reading an article the other day that mentioned fat giving off hormones and muscle not.  So I'm going to assume the strength training hasn't hurt anything.

Made this banana bread this weekend.  OMG was it amazing! Even H devoured it.
This Stuffed Spaghetti Squash was delish too.
Made a big batch of this Tomato Soup to bring for lunch this week with a salad.  It was super easy and tastes really good.

QOTW: What, if any, are your Easter plans?  Sunrise service at church at 6am, then we're hosting Easter lunch with both sides of our families.  I'm really excited that H's cousin and his wife are coming.  They did 3 rounds of failed IVF and are now choosing to live child free. H is really hoping they stay after everyone leaves and we can chat with them.  They're very open about their journey and decision to live child free.

  • Any updates on your TTC process? PCOS and IF suck!!! That is all. I think I'm going to start Provera tonight. I need to double check the calendar tonight and make sure there's nothing major in a couple weeks that would make me want to delay AF a bit longer.

Are you doing anything new to battle the PCOS b*tch? no.

How are you doing with diet and exercise? Diet is good, exercise is meh. My knee is still swelling with any exercise so I can only do a tiny bit here and there until it hurts and I have to stop.

Any suggestions for PCOS friendly meals or workouts? no

Any updates on your TTC process? Nope, still taking a break

Are you doing anything new to battle the PCOS b*tch? Nope

How are you doing with diet and exercise? I didn't have a chance to workout Friday-Monday, but I worked out yesterday morning and evening and this morning.  I'm hoping to do some weights tonight.  Diet has been good, but I drank way too much beer and wine on Saturday :(

Any suggestions for PCOS friendly meals or workouts? I just tried this Chobani Greek Yogurt and it was so yummy!  It's going to be a new staple breakfast item for me.  It's blueberry yogurt with chia and hemp seeds and walnuts.

    image

As for workouts, I've been pinning things like crazy.  I'm still focusing on my T25 program (1.5 weeks till I start the Beta program!!), but I want to try some of them out.  I'd really like to focus some more on my midsection since that is where most of my weight is.  I think I'm going to try this routine this week sometime.

For all ladies not just moms.

QOTW: What, if any, are your Easter plans?  Well, any holiday that falls on a Sunday is always celebrated on Saturday because my family likes to drink and stay up late.  So, we are going to my aunts house on Saturday and cook out.  I'm hoping I can keep away from the wine.  We'll see....

AW/FFC: H's birthday party was on Saturday and I made him a replica cake of his beer pong table.  I think it turned out pretty good :)

  • @ystaalenburg You are crazy talented.  That cake is awesome and looks delicious!

Also, you're not going to want to hear this, but the only way I've gotten my midsection to go down is by going 100% GF.  It's like the PCOS belly pouch curse.  No amount of exercise or situps would get that thing to leave, but 1.5 months of GF and it's half the size.

  • Thanks @brij2006!  So, with the gluten free diet, do you just eat gluten free breads and pastas?  I don't really eat a lot of those things to begin with, so it shouldn't be too hard to switch.

I do whenever I'm craving something that would normally have gluten in it.  But otherwise I just eat things that are naturally gluten free.  So mostly lots of fruits, veggies, and protein.  I still try to stick with the low dairy/ high protein part of the PCOS diet though.

So today's menu is a banana and GF protein bar (Luna bar) after the gym, snack was celery and PB, lunch is that tomato soup I posted, salad with a hard boiled egg, and greek yogurt.  Afternoon snack is veggies with hummus, and dinner will be shredded buffalo chicken on a lettuce wrap with rice and green beans.

We are gluten free too (except when I cheat at work b/c there's no GF options available...) Quinoa pasta is amazing and rice pasta is pretty dang good too. Tastes just like the "real" thing. Rudi's gluten free fiesta tortillas are fantastic too. we use them for enchiladas, tacos, etc. They fall apart a little easier(but not bad) and the taste is perfection. You can buy gluten free all purpose flour to use for baking, but I have a recipe that I use to make my own. Tastes great! To be honest, I don't miss the gluten products.  You'd be surprised how easy it is to find GF stuff in mainstream stores now too!

  • @rockabye What's your recipe for GF flour?  I tried one this weekend that took brown rice flour, coconut flour, and tapioca.  It wasn't bad, but the tapioca didn't mix in well with some of the recipes.

Same here. Before our wedding I weighed 135 and wore a size 4, yet still looked 3 months pregnant.  Even after working with a personal trainer for 3 months and focusing on that area.
Now I weigh 10 pounds more and fit back into those pants.  Just 2 months ago they wouldn't button.

Although I will warn that if you do see a difference, a few bad days can swell it back up.  After our CP last month I drank 5 beers on Saturday and the next day I had a lot of things I shouldn't have.  My jeans wouldn't button on Monday morning.

  • Ok, I searched online and it's HARD to find, but I think this is it.. It sounds right, but I'll double check against the book tonight.

    Brody's Bakery's gluten-free flour blend

Recipe below makes 2 cups. Use cup for cup for any flour.

    • 1 cup brown rice flour
    • 1/2 cup tapioca starch
    • 1/2 cup potato starch
    • plus 1 tsp xantham gum (or guar gum) for every 2 cups of this blend

Just make sure to mix it really well and give it a good shake if you store it and use it later. :)

  • @rockabye Awesome, thank you!

Also, for the tapioca starch, do you just use the tapioca you find in the pudding aisle?  I searched all over for a "Tapioca starch" and that's the only thing I could find.  So maybe I used the wrong ingredient.

For the potato starch do you just use instant potatoes?

  • @brij2006 - noooo... it's tapioca starch, which is different. Looks like flour. Same thing with potato starch. I am pretty sure that all of the flours/starches and xantham gum that I have are Bob's Red Mill brand, but you can also find some of this stuff in bulk in certain stores sometimes too (Whole Foods, Sprouts, etc.. not sure what you have around you). Bob's also has a pre-made gluten-free flour mix that is pretty good too. (And the pancake mix is good, and pizza crust is good, and all kinds of stuff!)

    Brown rice flour

    Tapioca starch

    Potato starch

    Xantham gum

There are a couple bundles on their site too. Just click on "gluten free".

Yeah, I've unfortunately already experienced that.  This past Saturday I definitely indulged too much and completely went off my diet.  Come Monday the scale said I was up 4lbs and I wore sweat pants to work!  I think the beer and wine had the most impact, so I'm definitely going to try to limit that from now on.  It sucks because I like drinking a few glasses of wine on the weekends. I suppose I'll get used to not having that just like I've gotten used to not having everything else!

  • @rockabye HAHAHA so that's why my GF cinnamon rolls didn't rise and were as hard as a rock. Lol.  I seriously searched all over the store for them.  Then just said screw it and improvised.  I ate them anyways.

Hey, at least the banana bread I did that with tasted amazing.

Guess I'm just going to have to order from Amazon.  We have Hyvee that's an hour away, and they have a GF section but didn't have either one of these.  The nearest Whole Foods is near Chicago.  So a 2 hour drive.

  • Definitely do amazon then! or check prices against Bob's site. Or heck, just google and see if you can find somewhere with a better price :) The prices on Bob's site are pretty accurate for what I've seen in store so I'd use that as a comparison for prices. GL!

  • Any updates on your TTC process? Still NTNP. Decided to start Provera last night to induce a bleed because I was on CD60 and no AF in sight. Really bummed about having to use Provera again. I've been having cycles that range from 30 to 50-ish days since starting Metformin but for some reason, this cycle just didn't work out.

Are you doing anything new to battle the PCOS b*tch? Nothing at the moment but I am going to ask my obgyn about upping my Metformin dose when I see her on May 5th.

How are you doing with diet and exercise? Pretty good. I bought a FitBit Flex and it has really helped to motivate me.

Any suggestions for PCOS friendly meals or workouts? Nothing in particular.

QOTW: What, if any, are your Easter plans? Dinner with the in-laws. I am thinking about finding a cute Easter-themed desert to bring.

FFC: I am totally eating a small chocolate Easter bunny tonight. I know it's not healthy in any way but I budgeted for it in my calories for the day and I am going to enjoy that bunny sooo much! Yum!
