Recommend a Great Inexpensive Laptop

I'm in the market for a new laptop and was wondering if anyone can recommend a good one that is not expensive. Most of mine seem to die after maybe 2 year's time. I've owned Dell, Toshiba and HP so far. Also, do they come with anti-virus?

Thanks!!

Re: Recommend a Great Inexpensive Laptop

  • I have an Acer Aspire One.  It's going on almost two years.  DH snagged it for about $170 on sale.  I don't get into much tech details since he's in the IT field so I'll be very honest I have no clue what it really has other than Windows7.  I love it.  It's small, easy to use and light.  I just wanted to be able to edit my photos, play on the interwebs, basic documents, etc.  DH's set up is much fancier but it's just not my thing.

  • I'm no help as I only ever own Macs, but I'm sure Microsoft laptops are more affordable.  You can always check craigslist.

  • Thanks! Is it true that Mac's are way better than other laptops? How long do they last?
  • You don't have to worry about viruses with Mac's. We have one that we got back in 2008, it's a little bit slower and the battery doesn't last as long, but it still works pretty great.

I've had mine since 2010 and it is still working great!  It's true you never have to worry about viruses with macs.  I never will go back to microsoft.

  • Thanks, everyone!
  • I have a Compaq and it has lasted me 3 years now. My mom got it on sale for $199. It moves pretty slow but gets the job done. I can play the SIMs 2 on it but not 3 and I can play games like plants vs zombies and other things like that. I mostly just use it for the basic internet and excel. It works great!

  • I'm a huge fan of macs if you have some money saved.  That said, the PC laptops/notebooks have gotten so dang cheap that they're almost ALMOST disposable.

I think it depends on what you use it for.  My mom has a mac because she does some graphic design on it.  My H really wants one because he composes music.  But I use microsoft office and the internet pretty much exclusively, so a PC will suffice for my needs.

Now are macs awesome and sexy and pretty much virus-proof?  Yes.  But are they cheap?  Not really.

That's true, but you get what you pay for.  My last Dell Desktop got hacked somehow and all of my files were in danger.  I had an IT guy I know save as much as he could for me and then I transferred it to my new Mac.  Everything is so dang easy with a Mac.  I use it for designing my website, storing my photos, and designing documents for my business.  DH uses it for photography.

  • Macs are definitely the best value. My last one worked great for seven years, and still works fine, if slightly slow. If any problems do arise, you can get them fixed for reasonable cost at an Apple store.

That said, if you don't have the money for an Apple right now, my work computer is a Lenovo and I'm pretty happy with it. Just keep that antivirus up to date! I have had minor malware issues that I've been able to solve.
  • I've had my Asus for 4 years with no major problems other than it running a little slower these days. I paid ~$400 for it. I love asus.

  • Ditto what PPs said about Macs.  DH and I both invested in them a few years ago and they run like brand new.  I found a great deal on both of them as they were transitioning to newer versions of iOS, but that can be hard to find.  They are worth the money, though, over the long term.
