SERIOUS SPOILERS HAPPENING HERE. WARNING. DANGER, DANGER WILL ROBINSON! I NEED TO TALK TO SOMEONE ABOUT THIS! I stayed up until midnight last night, because I couldn't put it down without knowing what happened. I just couldn't. After Ziri died I sobbed. Straight up sobbed. And then, when Karou found out he could be resurrected, I sobbed again. The canteen. I wanted a happy-ish ending, and I felt like I got that. Among all the war, I knew it wouldn't be peachy...and the moment when Akiva was with Scarab I truly thought I wouldn't get a happy ending. The only thing missing was Brimstone. I REALLY held out hope that he'd be back. SOB. Basically, this book was an emotional roller-coaster that I LOVED. Is anyone else as blown away at Laini Taylor's writing? Not only is every word perfect, but the depths to this story is just jawdropping to think of creating this world and then writing it down. WOW.

I finished listening yesterday - and because I listened to it, I have no idea how to spell some of the words, so forgive me. I still love Zuzana the most - her relationship with Mik is terrific. And he proposed on the back of a stormwing! Sigh.

I love that the ending wasn't a conventional happy ending - they love each other, but they still have work to do. But they will own a blanket together.

I LOVED this book. I powered through Friday and Saturday night to finish.

Ditto everything you said about Ziri and Liraz. What a roller coaster of emotions, that pair. They are perfect for each other. When Ziri died, I expected Liraz to fall apart later in the book. So glad they found happiness with each other!

I kept hoping for Brimstone to come back too! I mean, I knew it was extremely unlikely but I still held out hope against hope. I almost thought Esther would be an instrument to bringing him back; instead, she turned out as loathsome and self-serving as President Coin. Mik stealing all of her wishes in his violin case was my favorite part. =D> I wanted to give Mik a high infinity!

Lastly, I want a stormhunter. For reals.

I finished this yesterday.

I was seriously DRUNK on the writing in this book. Like, I would read passages and my head would start swimming with how beautiful and breathtaking the words were, and I'd finish each chapter dizzy and heartbroken and delighted all at once.

I LOVED THIS BOOK.

Parts that made me die:

- the first scene with Akiva and Liraz in the cave (when they almost jump each other but don't). Holy crap. The tension in that scene was so amazing, I wanted to throw up when it was over. In a good way.

- when Ziri died. I cried buckets.

- the part when Morgan Toth fucked over Eliza. THE RAAAAAAGEEEE!!!!

- when we discover that Mik stole fake grandma's wishes. HAHAHAHAHAHA IN YO FACE, BITCH!!!!

- when the knife passes through Akiva (my heart stopped) and then they FINALLY kiss.

- when it's revealed that Liraz is alive, and then when we find out that THEY WON! ::FIST PUMP::

- when Akiva and Karou finally get to be together in the end.

But the part that killed me MOST, more than any other part in the whole book, was when we find out that Liraz saved Ziri's soul by singing him into her canteen. Oh God. I'm tearing up just thinking about it. Completely, utterly wrecked.

I was totally waiting for Brimstone. But we don't really know whether he was in the Cathedral or not, you know?

I wonder if she'll write another series in this world.

Oh man, I powered through and finished this book last night.
Like @EliStar said, I was COMPLETELY wrecked when Liraz said she sang for Ziri's soul in the thurible. Not just that part but also that Karou said she would make the song part of resurrections to come for Liraz. I loved that and feel like it showed so much character development on both of their parts.

Also when the knife goes through Akiva, I threw the book down. DH looked at me confused and I yelled "Seriously? ZIRI AND AKIVA?! WHO ARE YOU, LAINI TAYLOR?!"

I also enjoyed the addition of Eliza and how the mystery swirled around her. The book kept me guessing.

All in all, this book was beautiful and such a perfect ending to a world I loved with characters I grew to love as well.

ETA: I also LOVE LOVE LOVE that Razgut jumped on Esther's back.

OH MAN. This part was ALMOST as good as Mik stealing her wishes. I giggled thinking of Esther stuck with whiny Razgut!

DITTO. I was sobbing at that part. Like, had to get up and go pee to clear my tears so I could continue reading. Just thinking about her singing and how much she desperately wanted to save him. And then thinking about how much that meant to Karou and how much it showed that people can get over differences and make a better tomorrow.

And, her writing is like legit amazing. It should be studied in HS. And in college. and everywhere. Gorgeous and powerful and GAH!

AND after she had already lost Hazael's soul? OMG.

AANNNDD how Karou could sense the fire cupped in the palm in sensing Kiri's soul, knowing it was hers? OMFG.

I read that chapter about 6 times.

Blown away. Laini Taylor is a freakin genius. I'm so sad this series is over and I haven't been able to pick up anything else since I finished Saturday night.

The writing was just as poignant and whimsical and gorgeous as in the first book and the moments--all of the beautiful, terrible, messy, complicated, funny, and yes, yes, yes! moments-- just made the book for me. I'm kind of in denial that the characters aren't real people.

Favorite parts for me:

Ziri and Liraz: pretty much every scene with them- each on their own, but their scenes together amde me melt. When he takes her to the thermal pools and tells her who he really is, the scene where Liraz tells Karou about singing his soul into her canteen to try to save him (heart asplode!). But after he was resurrected and walks up behind her and said "We haven't been properly introduced," - gah! Tears. Big, sloppy, happy, hopeful tears. And her awkwardness and over the whole thing just made it all the more real and better.

Mik and Zuzana riding in on a stormhunter-- fairytale task, indeed.

Liraz keeping Mik and Zuzana warm while they slept.

Zuzana giving Esther lip about the way she treated Karou even after the woman had just set them up in this giant plush suite and given them new clothes. I loved her fierce spirit and her and Karou's friendship.

Razgut and Esther together forever- ha!

Karou finally letting go not being ashamed of loving Akiva and the two of them sneaking off into the cave, and her being able to touch him again with his anti-hamsa magic. In book 2 I was devastated that she was so filled with hatred towards him, but now I get how much she had to process and come to terms with in order to arrive in this place. Having that be so hard-won made it all the more powerful.

Eliza coming forth and saying that the godstars hadn't existed... yet and finding out that they were the godstars. That pretty much blew my mind. I had theorized that Eliza had something to do with the chimaera and seraphim creation myths, but I thought she might end up being Ellai or Nitid and Razgut the raping sun, but the idea that myths could be past or present and they were part of them, well, that was genius.

And of course the last scene with Karou and Akiva in their home together with their blanket.

I'm still sad that Brimstone didn't make a reappearance though. When Issa repeated his last message to Karou: "Daughter of my heart, twice daughter..." tears abounded. I knew it was a longshot, but I still held out hope until the very end too. In fact, I thought that when Carnassial came to Karou's tent towards the end that he was going to tell her they'd found Brimstone's soul. But alas, no. Sad, but I sort of understand. I think bringing back both him and Ziri would have made for two near-impossible resurrections. Not that I would have complained and wouldn't have just gone with it though.

But man, well done, Laini Taylor. THAT'S how you end a series. This needs a star for every one of the godstars.
