Places to sell a car.

If you were to sell your car right now, where all would you list it for sale at?

I'm thinking cars.com, autotrader.com, and Craigslist.  Are there any other places a car buyer would be searching for a car, that I'm missing?

It's going to be in the $21-22k range. So we want to try and sell it on places that people looking for vehicles in that range will try to find them.  However, we want to avoid the dealership as a trade in because we know we will get more selling it private party.

Re: Places to sell a car.

  • Honestly if I was going to spend that much on a car, I would not buy from a private seller.  I would be too afraid of getting burned.

    Others may have better advice.

Damn. That's honestly what I'm afraid of.  People spending that kind of money aren't buying privately. They're going to a dealership.

Yes, I think so.  Most will also be taking out a car loan to spend that kind of money, especially with interest rates as low as they are right now, and the lenders could get hinky with a private sale in case the car isn't in the greatest shape.  I know we had to submit our dealorship's name, etc. to our lender so they could be comfortable with it (though we went with a credit union, and they're typically more cautious than banks).

It might be worth trying for a few months to see if you get any bites. And then if you don't consider other options.

That's kind of what I'm thinking at this point.  Selling my car will get us $17k further out of debt.  I absolutely love the car, but we don't NEED it. So I may try a couple months to sell it online, then we'll re-evaluate.

  • My dad had good luck selling on Craigs List. He sold 2 of his own cars and helped a neighbor sell his on there as well. I don't have the details of the process but everything went smoothly.

  • I sold my car through word of mouth. My aunt knew someone who was looking for a car for his daughter and they knew I took care of my cars. Just let your friends and family know you're looking to sell your car, it was easy.
  • I would have to agree but it cant hurt to post it on craigslist and see what happens.

Carmax isn't horrible pricewise well atleast compared to dealers... they can generally do better then what the average dealer will give you for it. They go according to NADA retail vs. most dealers now just use autotrader auction price which is really stupidly low. But make sure you go in there knowing what www.nadaguides.com says your car is worth.... I went in with just what kbb says so i said i wanted 12k because kbb said 10,500.... they came back with exactly 12... it seemed too easy. So i went on NADA and Clean Trade-in on my car says 13,850... but my husband went in for his car and they also gave him 12k ... And Clean Trade-in on his car was 11,650. They have my name on file now so i don't know i might go in a different carmax with like my maiden name and see if they'll give me more.... because something isn't right.

  • I have had luck in Craigslist and my mom and friend have too. Ours were $4,000-8,000.
  • My friend posted her car on Craigslist and Carmax and actually ended up selling to a dealership for her asking price - which was about $15,000. I really don't think you'll sell to a private buyer for that price, but who knows, a dealer in the area might be looking for your specific car.
  • I think its worth a shot to try and sell it on craigslist or autotrader/carmax. I also think word of mouth/friends/social media is a good place to try too.

I have purchased many cars through private sellers with an auto loan. That isnt a problem as long as they actually can get approved for the loan.

  • I would do some leg work and take it to some used car dealerships.  You might be surprised on how much they will give you for it.

I have also successfully sold a car on Craig's List.  It was easy peasy, but at $2,000 was definitely in a different stratosphere.

I recently bought a car and almost bought from a private seller on Craig's.  Her car was listed at $8900.  My credit union was fine with it, until the seller disclosed it had a salvage title.  Bank was not cool with that (nor was I).

So the car I did buy was off of Auto Trader.  I actually didn't realize a private person could list on Auto Trader.  At least in my areas, all the Auto Trader cars I searched were through dealerships.
