Audible Questions

I'm thinking about getting (joining? ) audible but I'm not sure I understand fully how it works. So I get 1 credit a month. Does 1 credit = 1 book? Do I have to wait until the next month to get another book or can I buy more credits? How much for the credits?
Do I have to use audible to listen to the books or can I save them somewhere? If I cancel, do I get to keep the books I've already gotten?

I've been doing pretty good with audio books from my library but I really want to do an Outlander and BDB reread and my library doesn't have them on audio either digital or CDs.

The number of credits you get each month depends on which "plan" you purchase. Yes, one credit = 1 book and in most cases you are paying less per credit than the book would cost to purchase on its own (even with the audible discount). If you want to buy more books/month than you have credits you get a member discount on all audio books you purchase through audible.

I have only listened to my books on my iphone and ipad through audible, but you download them from the cloud to your phone so you can listen to them without internet/wifi/when your phone is in airplane mode.

I just cancelled my audible membership and I still have full access to my account and all of the books in my library. I can still purchase audio books through audible at full-price too. I loved it but I got really behind and have 6 or 7 "unread" audio books so it didn't make sense for me to keep the membership.

ETA: Sometimes they offer really cheap books or BOGO and you don't have to use your credits to purchase those, you can save your credits for the expensive books.

    Does 1 credit = 1 book?

Usually, years ago I bought Game of Thrones and they were 2 credits, I think some longer books are two credits. And sometimes there are BOGO sales, etc.

Do I have to wait until the next month to get another book or can I buy more credits?

You can buy books at a discounted price, I believe you can only buy credits when they offer them at random.  Like sometimes you will be able to buy 3 credits for $20.00 etc.

    How much for the credits?

1 credit per month plan is $14.95 but there are other plans, prices should be on the website.

Do I have to use audible to listen to the books or can I save them somewhere?

You can put them on your ipod and just about any MP3 player and the audible app for ipod and iphone is great!

If I cancel, do I get to keep the books I've already gotten?

Yes and you can still use your account to buy audiobooks but not at a discounted price and you can buy daily deals etc.

  • Oh glad you asked, I have been debating this too.  I am not sure I am at one audiobook per month quite yet, which is why I haven't joined.  Oh and I am cheap ;)

Say I have 3 unused credits but decide to cancel my membership because I have so many I haven't listened to, can I cash them in later? or would you do that before you cancel your membership?

  • I did one credit a month, but sometimes I wanted more.  I splurged and bought 24 credits at one time - it is the cheapest per credit (under $10), and then I can buy books whenever I want them.

I think you have to use your credits before you cancel your membership. There is an option to put your membership on hold for 3 months if you aren't ready to use your credits and think you can catch up in 3 months.
  • You can also buy an audible gift membership if you want to try it for a few months and see if it works for you.
they have 3 months, 6 months, and a year for options.
They also have made all books worth 1 credit, they did use to have some longer books that were worth 2 but have since changed that.

Do you have a Gold or Platinum plan? You can downgrade to Light and keep your credits.
I had a Gold membership originally. I LOVE Audible, but our household budget is tight and my mom had originally given me a year of membership as a gift for my birthday. As I was going through the cancellation process, Audible offered me the chance to do the Light Plan. I think it was only $10 for the year. I won't get any more credits but I can still take advantage of sales and Daily Deals (I subscribe to the daily email and sometimes find books I want for less than $5). Here's what they say about it:
"The AudibleListener Light Plan is available only on an annual basis and only to Gold and Platinum Members who want to downgrade their plan type. AudibleListener Light Plan members do not receive membership credits but a Gold or Platinum Member converting to the AudibleListener Light Plan may have AudibleListener Rollover Credits that they can rollover when they downgrade. Audible will charge members who downgrade to the AudibleListener Light Plan the yearly plan fee each year on the yearly renewal date."
