NMMR

Well maybe a little MM related.

I stopped dying my hair to save money. Now I have gray hairs, not a lot, but enough that they're noticible. I'm almost 27 and graying...I must have gotten my dad's genes :/

I'm a little sad ;(

  • Store box color sets & coupons can make it affordable. Not as fun as being pampered when someone in a salon does it for you, but still does the job.

  • I"m afraid I will be in the same boat as you soon.  I got my first grey hair when I was 25 and I use to pull it out but now I have so many it is not worth pulling them all out.  I have black hair and when it's straight it's more noticeable.  When I wear it curly it's not as bad.  I will probably go the box dye route as well :(

  • I got my first gray hair at 19 :( I started dying my hair at 22...this is the first time I've let my roots grow out.

I cannot get box dyes to look right...or I haven't found the right boxed dye. They all seem to dry my hair out and make it really frizzy.

Can you ask your stylist which boxed set is the best quality?  Sorry, but I would pay for dying it if the box stuff isn't working.  It's one of those things I would splurge on and cut back on something else.  Hair is important to me.

  • I've been noticing more and more gray hairs lately...Luckily I have light brown hair with natural blonde highlights so the grays blend in with the blonde for now...I'm 28. :( I will refuse to dye my hair until it starts becoming really obvious. The upkeep is just not worth the trouble for me!

This was my thought. I have dark brown hair that gets natural highlights that are more red than blonde in the summer.  I really didn't like the mono-tone color of the box sets, and the ones that are suppose to have more depth just didn't look natural.

for me I'm willing to spend money on skin care and hair care products if they get better results. you wear your face and hair everyday, I'd rather spend money on that stuff than clothing. My job is also in clinical research, I spend my day working with doctors and meeting patients who are clinical trial eligible, I've found that my apperance is important for getting respect (and patient referals) from doctors, and maintaining the trust of patients who are trusting us to protect them. maybe they'll respect and trust me more if my graying hair is making me look older :)

having my stylist match my color close to my natural color I only had to color every 8-10 weeks, everyother appointment she just did my roots and the others she refresshed the whole thing....it was less expensive than I thought it would be...but still enough that when we had to cut back that was one of the things that went.

I actually cut my hair back to a pixie when I decided to stop dying (I'd been thinking about it anyways), esentially I cut all the hair that had been dyed off. so now I'm going in once a month for a $40 haircut as oppose to every 8 weeks for a $100-120 cut/color....so that money saving plan only worked a little.

I get my hair cut and highlighted for $75 bucks at Family Hair cut. It's one of those chain places and I love the job they do!

I used to get them both done at a salon for probably over $150 and I will never go back to paying that. I get my hair trimmed ($16) every 3 months, and highlights  every 5-6 months.

Maybe you should try to find someplace cheaper or just get a highlight instead of the dye job...everything may blend in nicely

  • What about looking into a hair school and getting it done there?  The last time I paid to get mine done was at the school and it cost $40 for 2 colors, cut, and a style.

  • I second the hair school if you have one close. I get mine done at JCPenney salon and its $80 for a cut and color. I have tons of gray hair, box color does not work for me, so I have to have it done. I'm not cool with gray at 30. Its been gray since 25.

  • I was including the tip i give the stylist in those prices.  I love the stylist I see, this is the first time in my life that I trust what my stylist does (she's actually refused to do things I asked her to because she knows they won't turn out how I'm picturing them in my head). She did my hair for my wedding and has done my hair ever since...I think there's value in that and in supporting a small local business.

I have also tried the hair school...ended up in tears several times. trying highlighting over full color is a great suggestion, except highlighting is more expensive than full color both at the hair school and my salon (likely because it takes longer).  I think I have to either suck-it-up and live with the gray, or suck-it-up and go back to paying for color.  I'm planning to grow my hair out at the end of the summer (humidity makes it do an aweful frizzy thing so keeping it short will save me 30-40 minutes of styling time every morning in the summer) so I won't need monthly appointments then.

I totally understand!  My stylist is about 35 minutes south of where we live and I still go and see her because she can actually cut a straight line!  It is so hard to find someone that can do this.

  • I also recommend a hair school if one is at all nearby.  I have an Aveda school near me.  So Lucky!  My dark blond/light brown hair is difficult to get lighter because, although I have no red hair, my hair tends to turn red when it is dyed.  I paid big bucks at a salon who did a HORRIBLE job.  Then I discovered the Aveda school and my hair comes out perfect every time I go.  For about $55.  And I have very long hair, which a lot of salons charge extra for, but Aveda doesn't.

Sorry to sound like an Aveda commercial, lol.  I just love them so.

  • I tried saving some money about 2 years ago by coloring my hair at home. OMG, I will never do that again. Even thought it looked like every piece of hair was covered, somehow I missed some areas, leaving patches on my head, and it dried out my hair. From now on, hair is something I will not try to save money on.
  • Just to throw out a different perspective, I've decided to embrace the gray.  Do I love seeing it when I look in the mirror?  Not particularly, but I would rather accept myself the way I am than spend the money and time getting my hair done so frequently.  I am lucky that gray doesn't stand out on me like it does on some hair colors/textures, but anyone who looks closely is definitely going to see it.  Honestly, I think maintaining a healthy lifestyle can make you look young an vibrant regardless of hair color.
  • @maple2 at the moment I'm choosing to embrace the gray :)
