Shoes for walking around

What shoes do you wear for walking around amusement parks, zoos, etc., with shorts. I feel like tennis shoes look dumb - maybe b/c mine are black and my legs are horribly white, even with a tan.  I am looking for an option that would work with shorts and casual skirts.

I feel like i need decent support for walking.  I self-diagnosed myself with plantar fasciitis...my heal gets very sore walking around all day.  I have a pair of crocs ballet flats (they look moderately decent, don't look like crocs, and offer some support), but am hoping for some other options because said crocs also make my feet sweat.  I feel like a fashion nightmare!

Any thoughts?  Photos? I may get some toddler free time to go to DSW tonight (along with a rewards certificate) but I will likely only have an hour, so I need a plan!

Thanks ladies!

Re: Shoes for walking around

  • I self diagnosed myself with plantar fasciitis, too!   My mom has it, and I had the same kind of pain. Anyway, I usually wear Teva flip flops.  They are cushiony and my foot doesn't hurt as much in them.  Although I will say that if I'm going to Kennywood or somewhere that it's a lot of walking/standing, I suck it up and wear my tennis shoes.  I don't care what it looks like anymore - my feet hurt so I'm wearing shoes that hurt less.

Also, doing yoga helps my pain a lot.  When I go on the regular, I notice a big difference.
  • Flip flops are the worst thing you can wear if you have PF, not self-diagnosed. The podiatrist said he wants them banned. Amber, part of the PT for plantars is stretching the calf muscles so that is why it feels so much better when you do yoga.

As for shoes, in the summer I wear Birkenstocks, Sperry Angelfish or Jack Purcells if we are going to be walking a lot.

  • My mom has diagnosed PF and I know when she was having issues - she liked Birkenstocks. I've also hear Born shoes are good. I'm a tennis shoe fan - I'd rather have comfy feet ;) I know Skechers came out with shoes that have memory foam that look very comfy - I'd try those as a casual option as well:)
  • I have some feet issues too.
If we are walking a lot I will just wear sneakers. Usually I would be wearing shorts if that's the case (I think sneakers are fine with shorts).

If it's really hot and not extensive walking I wear flip flops. I have a pair of reef ones that aren't super thin soles and have an arch in them. I saw some supportive ones last year at the running store and almost bought them.

If I want to look a little nicer and if wearing a skirt/dress I have some Clark's sandals I love. They are cute and really comfortable. I've worn them to the zoo before.

I don't see the exact style anymore but they are similar to these. I have a nude and black pair and got them from dsw a couple years ago.

  • I wore Sanuk yoga mat sandals in Disney every other day (alternated with regular sneakers) and they were comfy and nonsweaty!  I had the sling style, my mom had the regular flip flops...both worked well for us that week. I'll probably make them my new "zoo" shoe this year :)

  • I hate wearing tennis shoes to an amusement park/zoo.  They ruin my whole outfit :P .  But if I am doing crazy walking, I suck it up and wear them.  I did wear my sperry  boat shoes to Idlewild last year and my feet felt pretty good.

  • Oh, my feet sweat too. I bought these when I ordered my new Sperry's, they are awesome.

  • Women's Relaxed Fit: Bikers - Fashion Frontier
Women's Relaxed Fit: Breathe Easy - RelaxationI wore both of these while at Disney and they were super comfortable. In fact, the cushion inside is made of memory foam. They did rub on my heels a little bit, but I most new shoes do that until I break them in.

I also like teva flipflops and sandals but I don't have PF (just other weird foot issues)
  • Thanks ladies.  I will be checking out the options at nap time since I am off today!

Looking forward to heading out tonight to see what I can find, since we're leaving for Atlanta for the weekend on Saturday and going to the aquarium!

I didn't know about those.  I need them!

  • Just a word of caution, if you get Sperry's, Macy's charges $10 more than anywhere else. So weird but when I bought my grey ones I wanted them that day (I'm impatient!) and they were $95 at Macy's, $85 at Nordstrom, and $85 on Sperry.com. I ended up going with Sperry because they were also 25% off and 3% back on Ebates.

  • I am a huge BORN shoe fan.  80% of my shoes are BORN.  DSW has Born's lower end brand BOC which I don't like nearly as much since it does not provide the same level of comfort/support that the original BORN do.

  • I have PF as well (wow, there are a lot of us!), and I swear by Clark's. 6pm.com often has a good selection on clearance, and they make everything from dress shoes to boots to sporty shoes and even sandals. I love them! I bought my first pair right after I was diagnosed before we went to Europe for 2 weeks. I got a pair that look like what leiann posted and another fancier pair, and was totally fine the whole trip.
  • Thanks for the great selection, ladies.  I ended up with a pair of Merrel sandals that can be a little dressier, and a pair of Jeep J-41 sandals that I think will work OK with shorts.  Neither would be good for hiking or anything, but they feel like they would work pretty well for amusement parks, zoos, toursity stuff, etc.  I had found some Clarks that I liked, but alas not in my size.  And given that we are leaving tomorrow, I had no time to order.  :-(

But, the DSW in Robinson did have a number of non-tennis-shoe-but-still-supportive options if anyone else is looking.  Some of the sizes were slim picking, but if you had some time they may be able to find the right size!

  • Because of this thread :):):) I HAD to order a pair of Sperry Top Siders. They are silver and I love them already. HA! Can I get those sock things in person anywhere?

I have never seen the Sperry ones anywhere in person. But you can do a no-show liner. I think the Sperry ones stay on a little better though because they have silicone on the backs.
