NBR: Has anyone been to Savannah?

We are going to Hilton Head for a week next month and are planning to go to Savannah for a day. What are some must-see places or things to do? I've been so busy worrying about which books I want to read on the beach that I kind of forgot to research Savannah!

  • I'm so jealous! I love Savannah (and the beach!)...it's been a long time since I've been to Savanah but I remember going on some nighttime ghost tours there that were amazing. The specific one I went on was held inside an old hearse...Highly Recommend!!!

  • Is your LO into pirates?
If so and he is going you might want to eat at the pirate ship restaurant.
It's a local theme restaurant in a building that supposedly was a smugglers (pirates) den back in the day.
It's pretty fun/cute, food is fine (not bad not amazing typical theme place quality as I recall but that was a while ago so it may have improved or gotten worse)
The Juliette Gordon Lowe house is pretty neat if you were a girl scout.
Walk down riverwalk and check out the stores there and the Waving Girl statue.

  • I LOVED Savannah!  The main drag along the river can take up pretty much an entire afternoon - shops, restaurants, street performers, gorgeous views of the river.  The main park is amazing (I can't remember what it's called!).  We took a guided historic trolley tour as well, and that was actually totally worth it, but I love that stuff.

After you get back, you need to read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. :)

  • DH and I were married in Savannah.  I recommend the walking tour.  You get to see a lot of great sights and really get to wander the area and get information about it.  The riverwalk is lovely, too.  We also did a walking ghost tour that was much better than the ride-alongs because it's more atmospheric.  Still cheesy, ultimately, but not as cheesy as the other tours and you get right up close to the houses and cemeteries.  The pirate place is very cheesy and you can find much better food elsewhere.  Savannah has great food!  We did pop in the pirate place for a drink one night and the Jack Sparrow guy was pretty spot on with his impersonation.  For food I'd recommend the Oyster Bar.  Delicious!  And stop by River Street Sweets on the Riverwalk.

  • My family is from the Savannah area (Tybee Island/Statesboro).  We spend most of our time when we're there at the beach, but I agree with everyone who recommended walking along the Riverwalk and Forsyth Park.  Find a good seafood restaurant with low country boil too - I'm a fan of the Crab Shack on Tybee, although it would be a bit of a drive and you can find just as good in Savannah I'm sure.

The Crab Shack's atmosphere (and food) were awesome - totally worth the drive!
