Payroll taxes

I get paid biweekly, and I've noticed that the same amount is not being withheld from paycheck to paycheck. This week's paycheck was about $13 less than the last one. I asked someone in the finance department about why there was a difference, and he gave a vague answer about FICA and my deductions. However, my deductions don't change from paycheck to paycheck. They are the same as the last one, but for some reason, I had more taxes withheld this time. A co-worker came by and said the same thing has been happening to her, and she doesn't understand the discrepancy. Anyone know what is going on?

Re: Payroll taxes

  • Nope! I have only been here a couple of months, and the first month I wasn't having deductions. But my co-worker said that her 2nd paycheck of each month is usually like $15 less than the 1st. Deductions are always the same...shouldn't withholdings be the same?
  • Could it be related to how they do your healthcare or retirement deductions? H's is slightly different every once in a while and we think it's health insurance related (though he's a state employer so we gave up on getting a real answer long ago!)
  • I have the same thing going on, my one pay check is about $15 less than the other.  When I looked at my deductions, they take I think it is my life insurance out of one but not out of the other or something like that.  I looked at my pay stubs for this a few years ago.
  • Are your hours the same?  I punch in and out, so even during no over time checks depending on when I punch in and out I work over 40
