I have a possibly stupid OPK question

So - if I get a negative OPK that still has a line, would that most likely mean that I haven't O'd yet?  Because if I had, I would not get a second line at all, correct?  Ooorrr, is there a point where the hormone would stop being produced if I was just gearing up to O and then never did, resulting in no line at all?

  • Mine did a fade in/fade out. The day after O I could still have a second fainter line. It would eventually disappear completely, but not instantaneously after O.

Ugh, I just want to know how long I should plan on doing these in the morning... I don't know why, but they always feel like such a chore in a way that temping doesn't.

@seahorse01 - yep - finally have a stock again so my excuses are dwindling.

  • Are you new to OPKs? After a couple of months I started to notice a pattern, which really cut down on how many I had to use. But I also do not have PCOS or other ovulation issues, which I know complicated OPKs for people.

  • OPKS drive me crazy and unfortunately they're not the same for every person. No matter where I am in my cycle, chances are I will at least get a second shadow line on the OPK, it will never be stark white. Then it does a fade in about 3-4 days before O and then a fade out for a couple of days.

I haven't been good about using them consistently.  Also, my past few cycles have been getting longer each time, which makes it hard for me to guess when to start using them.

@amanda - boo!  That would drive me crazy.

I normally fade in for a few days, then get a straight positive, then totally stark white negative the next day. This month I had my first 2 day positive ever then the 3rd day nothing. My O days are pretty regular within a day or two. My period though, has always been on time, never late and with exception of this month, I usually spot for 2-3 days before my 3 day period so by the time I get to be able to test, Im already spotting.

Now Im wondering if my short periods or short O surges are a sign of any underlying issues. We are moving into month/cycle 13 TTC.

  • Whenever I've had true positive ones, they fade in/fade out.  They usually have a 2nd line for 3-4 days after O.

However, in my long cycles they pretty much always had 2nd lines.  There were only a few times where they were stark white negative.   What worked more for me as they got longer was checking CM and if I had some, then I would test to try not and miss O.

  • Keeping in mind that I only used opk's during days like 7-20, I always had a second line. Even if it was very faint. I only ever used to wondfo brand if doing cheapies. I never had one with a completely blank second line. In the beginning I tried the digi ones by clear blue easy too, just to confirm what I was seeing in the cheapies.

  • I get a second line every time that I pee on an OPK, but that's the PCOS. I know they recommend not using FMU because that would give you the results from the previous day.
