POV

I was wondering if you guys have preferences for how a story is written. First person, third person limited, etc. Is it a personal preference? Does it differ with different genres? I've read so many debates on how readers connect with the characters differently for each style of writing. Just wondering if it can make or break a story for you.
I write sexy books. I read all the books. I love dresses & macarons.

Re: POV

  • It never breaks a story for me, but I prefer first person.

  • I like 1st or a very close 3rd limited. I just find I can connect more with the characters that way.

  • I don't usually have a preference but I have a really hard time when the book jumps from POV to POV unless it's very well done. I feel like if it's not done well the train of thought and narration is lost for me and I lose interest in the story.

  • I think I generally prefer 3rd person.  I've read a couple books from a 2nd person POV and that was almost uncomfortable.
  • I don't have a preference.

  • I prefer 3rd person. I feel like you can get more of the surrounding story that way. And I feel like 1st person is done so much lately.

"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to."
    "I don't much care where –"
"Then it doesn't matter which way you go.”

    No preference here.
  • No preference. If it's well written, I don't care.

  • I don't have a preference. I actually like when there is more than one POV, but as others said it needs to be done well. Nalini Singh stands out as jumping POVs and doing it well.

I like a close 3rd or 1st person most, but I'll go with anything if it's really well done.

  • I don't usually notice all that much unless I really hate the POV used.  I generally dislike books that use 1st person present. I find them sort of amatuer-ish or something.  It's just really distracting to me for whatever reason.

  • I prefer first, but I agree with above, as long as it's well written, I don't care.

  • No preference as long as it's well written and I can easily tell whose POV it currently is.

  • No preference. I think it really depends on the story. Some are much better told but 1st person and others are better told by 3rd person of multiple POV.

  • I prefer 3rd person, especially if a book involves more than one POV. No matter how distinct the voices, there's always a moment when I forget whose head I'm in if it's not written in third.

I also enjoy 1st person past. Not a fan of 1st present, but I can easily adjust if it's done well.

  • I don't have a specific preference.

  • In general, I have no preference.  I have found that it is easier for me to transition multiple POVs if they're written in 3rd person.  If they're in 1st person I sometimes forget whose perspective I'm in, but this is an example of 'not done well' that PPs are talking about.
