My SBC Truly-Unfinished Category

My unfinished challenge category truly was "unfinished!" Instead of choosing a category from a past challenge that I didn't get around to starting, I chose the "Giller Prize nominee" category from last year's SuBC.

During the challenge, I started reading Larry's Party by Carol Shields after she was recommended to me by a local Canadian friend. Unfortunately, 75 pages in, I left the book on the train one morning during my commute! So I never finished the book or the challenge category! I had ordered a replacement from a used book site, so this seemed like the perfect time to try again!

I am not a big fan of books about everyday adult men living everyday angsty adult male lives. I didn't particularly enjoy The Finkler Question or Out Stealing Horses in spite of their critical acclaim. The subject bores me. I can't relate. However, I actually enjoyed Larry's Party and found that I read it much more quickly an enthusiastically than I expected!

The plot of the book simply follows Larry's life beginning in his early 20s. Work, marriage, life in general. The narration engages the reader partly through Shield's tone and writing style, but mostly by its circuitous narration. Larry's passion is hedge mazes, and like the labyrinths he studies, the story weaves back and forth, offering glimpses of what's to come and then turning back on itself suddenly. Larry suggest that the joy of navigating such a maze is found in submitting to this winding path rather than trying to reach the goal by the shortest route. In the same way, the reader is carried through Shield's story, turning this way and that, and the enjoyment comes simply from following its path, rather than focusing on its final goal.

Re: My SBC Truly-Unfinished Category

  • That's great that you finally got around to reading the book. Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure I remember you posting last summer about leaving your book on the train!

I'll definitely add this to my TBR.

Yep! I even sent a mail to the rail network in case it ended up in lost & found. Never heard back, so I ordered a used copy of the same edition from betterworldbooks.com
