Good News, Bad News

So it's 3:30am and I'm finally getting to bed.

Good news- we saw baby tonight. HR was 148bpm and measuring great at 7 weeks 4 days.

Bad news - we obviously have a high maintenance baby who decided to make mommy spot and freak out tonight as a first time momma. Again, everything looks fine but it definitely scared me a bit.

Also found out that I'm Rh- so I got my first Rhogam shot tonight.

Yay for seeing baby though. :)

  • Both my kids gave me the same kind of scare (and I also needed the extra Rhogam shots due to it). Not fun. Glad it's all looking well though.

  • Sorry about the scare but glad everything looks good!  Is it weird that I'm Rh- and I just got my first rhogam shot yesterday at 29 weeks?

  • Thank for all of the love, ladies. Spotting went from brown last night to bright red today. Called the dr and they said it may be from the transvaginal u/s and exam yesterday but could still use some thoughts and prayers that this baby stays put please. Trying to hold it together at work is the worst!

  • @PandMeant2B - I honestly have no clue what the protocol really is, I just know that I got a 'mini-dose' last night because I'm only in my 1st tri but I also got a card for my wallet that says that I'm negative and what dose they gave me when. I'm not sure what else I'll need for here but plan to ask the dr on Thursday when I go.
  • I got the card too, but it only says that I'm Rh - and the lot number and expiration date of the injection. The nurse said it was in case there were any issues they'll know exactly where it came from. Oh well. I'm not worried; just curious.

Funny story: a friend of mine got her shot today and the nurse asked if she knew why she needed a shot. She said, "Yeah, because I'm - and my husband is +." The nurse said, "We don't care what your husband is. If you're - you get the shot. Know why?.... because we don't know your husband is the father."  I thought that was both hysterical and incredibly logical.

  • @PandPMeant2B - Typically you only need the Rhogam shot if you're Rh- around 28 weeks and then again after birth if your LO is Rh+.  You won't need another one if your LO is Rh-.  The shot's half life is 12 weeks which is why they do it around 28 weeks to get you through delivery and the possibility of your blood mixing with LO's.

However, anytime there is any bleeding, they will also give the shot on the off chance it's LO's blood and they are Rh+. OP will need another shot at 28 weeks as well.

The reason for the shot is if a person with Rh- blood detects Rh+ blood, then your body will build antibodies and try to kill off any Rh+ blood it detects which could affect future pregnancies if you were to have an Rh+ baby in the future.

  • Sending good vibes your way. I had a bleeding scare, but baby was good on u/s and they couldn't even find the reason for the bleed. It resolved in a couple of days, but it was a nerve-wracking couple of days!

  • Thanks, @bobcee and @saisongbird. I knew I would need one and why, but didn't know why they did it at 28 weeks; thanks for explaining! The nurse told me they will definitely give me another one after birth because it's easier to just give it to everyone than test the babies.
