Pregnancy announcements? New trend?

I was lurking on TB and saw some posts about people mailing out "We're expecting" announcements in the mail to friends and family as their way of breaking the news (as opposed to in person, on the phone, email, etc.).

Is this a new trend? I see cute announcement pictures on Pinterest, but I thought of them for announcing on FB and the like, not for actual cards.

Have you ever received one or would you ever send one?

Re: Pregnancy announcements? New trend?

  • I actually considered sending them to my relatives that I don't see often. Except for telling in person/calling parents, grandparents, and very close friends, I thought mailing something physical would be nice. But in the end, I didn't worry about it. I've got a few aunts/uncles/cousins on FB, so I just posted it there for everyone.

  • I personally think it's a little weird. But then again, I live close enough to the people that I'd ever announce to that I could tell them in person.

I haven't seen this as the norm in my social group yet.

One thing in particular I don't like about it is that you can't control the mail. I'd think most people have a preference in the order they announce to people. What if the mail speed messes that up?

  • My cousins did this, sort of. It was both an announcement and Christmas card. I thought it was adorable. But I already knew at that point.  Close family and friends shouldn't find out this way, IMO. But, extended family/friends you don't see often but want to let know (especially if you don't want them surprised by a birth announcement).

  • I think it makes sense to send it to people who aren't on FB or e-mail or anything.  I have some family that isn't online much and who I don't talk to often, but that my parents would want me to send announcements to.

  • Our friends sent these out to family they knew weren't going to be at a family function, and that's where they were announcing.  So they wanted to make sure the other family members knew the news before the rest of them called telling.

We had actually planned on letting our Christmas cards last year tell people we were pregnant.  H wanted to do a picture with 2 large snowmen and a small snowman in the middle.  Then put some cute saying on it (I don't remember what it was).  If it hadn't been around Christmas that we would share the news, then we wouldn't have sent an announcement out.

  • I think it's cute but I don't know if I would actually do it, mostly because I'm too cheap/lazy lol. I think birth announcements being mailed make a little more sense.

  • I think it's a bit AW-ish. I would rather hear it in person, via email, on FB.

  • A friend did a Christmas card/ announcement combo. She announced on FB on Christmas Day, then everyone got their cards in the mail a few days later. They were really cute, but I dont think it will be something I would do.
  • I first got one of these from a friend a couple years ago, and it was nice to get a more personal announcement than finding out on FB. I wouldn't have expected her to call either, and I never see her in person, so it was a nice in-between. It was really simple, and not terribly AW-ish

  • I would actually contemplating doing this, if I ever have the opportunity to get to the point where I can announce to my family.  More as a "Thank you for all the prayers and love you've given us over the last 4.5 years, we wanted to let you know it was appreciated and We are having a baby."

But I'm an AW...so take that for what you will. Mostly for my aunts and uncles, who are more old school than a FB announcement.

  • I don't know. I don't like buying stamps. I do not like the dual Christmas card/ announcement, though. I think that's weird. We got one with an ultrasound pic on it. It skeeved me out and I couldn't really display it because it's weird to display your friends' wife's uterus on your mantle.
  • I think the announcement inside the Christmas card is good. I feel like a lot of people do updates about the things going on in their life. That doesn't always work out though depending on when you are due. I'm cheap so if I can't include something in the Christmas card then my family and friends have to rely on FB or the birth announcement.

I could hold you for a million years

I had a friend do this a little over a year ago.  She did it because it was more personal than a FB announcement for family and close friends.  She had already told her immediate family--but wanted to make it special for her close friends.  It totally made my day when I opened it.

It's not my style. I figure if I'm not close enough to someone to call them, email them or tell them in person than I'm probably not close enough to them for them to give a crap that I'm pregnant.

  • We sent a picture announcement out by email to our extended family as we don't have them all on FB and we didn't do a FB announcement anyways. I'm cheap and email doesn't cost as much as stamps.
