NGPR: Job Searching

I need some advice, ladies. I am currently casually looking for another job. I'm not really in a position where "I HAVE TO GET OUT NOW OR SO HELP ME I WILL GO CRAZY" but I am definitely getting there. I'm not applying for just any old job so I probably won't find anything immediately.

My question is: Should I let my managers know that I am kinda looking for something else? I work in a smaller place so everyone is fairly close. I plan to continue being friends with my managers after I leave and I am afraid that if don't tell them until I have to give my two weeks that it might upset them. But at the same time, I don't know if telling them now will ultimately threaten my current position with the company. And it's not my managers that I am worried about but their manager...because I am pretty sure they will have to tell him if I tell them. Does that makes sense? Am I just over-thinking it?

Re: NGPR: Job Searching

  • That's definitely a tough situation. In my line of work, once I actually get a job, it takes a month or two to get all of the pre-employment stuff done, so I'm able to give way in advance notice once I already have something else lined up. It doesn't sound like this would be the case for you. Truthfully, if I was worried about my job security (especially if you end up staying there longer than you are planning), I wouldn't say anything until the next job was locked in.

As a side note, I think, as women, we tend to care too much about hurt feelings when we leave a job. If it were a guy, they typically could careless and do whatever was best for their career. I try to always keep that in mind, which has helped.

GL with whatever you decide and with the job hunt!

I definitely would not tell them until you find something else and are ready to give your notice. Telling them now would more than likely change the dynamic you have with them and could really make for an awkward work environment.

Plus, if they know you are looking for something else that could prompt them to start looking for someone to replace you which is the last thing you want your employer thinking about.

Good luck on the job search!

I definitely agree with this. It was easier to leave my last job because I kept a more detached attitude when it came to what people would think of me after I left.

That's a big fear for me. The job market around here isn't the greatest and even though I don't plan on staying at my current job forever, I definitely don't want to lose it until I am ready.

  • Don't you dare say anything!
  • I wouldn't tell them. Just search and see what you find, and then put in your two weeks or whatever you find appropriate.

  • I'm in the same boat as you, Sparkly. I haven't told anyone I currently work with...I'm not even using anyone from there as a reference because I don't want them to know. Does it make me feel bad that I'm not being honest? Yes, but I know they would hold it against me in so many ways.

Best of luck in your job search!
