Help with investments/roll over options

I have a 401(k) and a pension plan from my old job that I am trying to decide what to do with. Not sure if I should roll them over to my new jobs 401(k) plan or open up an IRA. Any thoughts?

Re: Help with investments/roll over options

  • I always rolled them over to my new job's 401k.  Only since becoming self employed have I opened up new IRA's.

  • We roll ours into IRAs to have more flexibility in investment choices.

  • You can do either - I would probably do an IRA to have more control.

  • IRA for the old jobs' retirements. Utilize the new job's retirement 401(k) simultaneously.

For rollovers, you can check out Vanguard. They have little to no fees and their funds do well. Their customer service has always been great.

  • I like just moving them to a roll-over IRA, makes it nice and clean and you have full control over it versus rolling it over to a new employer's account and then at times having to fight to get the money rolled over somewhere else.  My wife had a night mare of a time to get her money rolled over from a "personal finance" group that was day trading her account so her fees were roughly 7% a quarter.
