Game of Thrones - the altar scene (spoilers for show and books)

I haven't been watching the show, but I have been following all of the fallout from the scene (last week I think) that has Jaime rape Cersei at the altar near Joffrey's body, rather than the consensual sex from the book.  Any opinions?

While I didn't like how the scene was changed, I do think it had one positive result. I think Jamie's character was getting a little tooo sympathetic, and this pulled the viewer back a little bit. In the books, you do sort of start rooting for him a little bit, but you also know that his sins are pretty much unredeemable. I felt like, in the book, you always remember the blood on his hands (there were two then,  natch).

I thought the TV version was making Jamie a character you rooted for, regardless of his past. The "rape" scene reined that in, and sort of put the viewer back to where we were in the books.

I'm probably not making any sense at all.

That being said, that scene was horrible. The writers said that they can't understand why viewers thought it was rape at all. Their intention wasn't to make it a rape scene. NO MEANS NO, you idiots.

  • It's been a while since I read it, but I thought I recalled Jamie being the one who was a little hesitant, and Cersei had kind of a cold "No, do it" attitude like she was just participating to manipulate him. So to me, the scene felt completely backwards. But maybe I misread/misremembered the book.

  • I reread the scene to refresh my memory - Jaime gets things started and Cersei resists, worrying about the septons finding them.  He forces a kiss on her and reaches under her dress and at that point, she goes from saying no and trying to push him off to saying "yes, do it now" and other enthusiastically consensual things.

  • I haven't read the books or seen the show, but I'm really fascinated by the discussion around this scene.

I haven't read the books but I thought this was a great article.

ETA: I was disturbed by what was clearly a rape scene and read this the day or so after the episode. I don't like the show as much after reading the liberties it has taken with the consent of these characters.
  • She gets turned on by the dominance, but did a really poor job of portraying that.

  • I agree with @sfgiantsjo about how he had become too likable and we start feeling too compassionate for him, but that does not change how I felt about watching that scene.

I actually didn't watch the episode after the one last week.  It was disgusting and honestly it has changed how I feel about the series.  I'm not saying I won't watch the show anymore, because I'm really not sure if I will or not, but I am still very disturbed over all of it.

  • It was really horrid and uncomfortable to watch and it made me ragey, but a lot of the scenes in this show are uncomfortable to watch - pushing the limits is pretty much their MO. I wasn't surprised that they went there.

And I thought this post was going to be about the altar scene in the last episode with the baby and the white walkers. It's been a while since I've read the books but I DON'T remember that happening.

  • I don't think I was as bothered by the rape scene as most.  I was really annoyed that they changed it from the book but there are other scenes in the show that disturbed me WAY more than that one (Joffrey and his shenanigans).

@EliStar I was thinking the same thing about the scene with the baby and the white walkers.  Between that and the Crastor's Keep scenes, I kept thinking 'where did all this come from?!'

  • I definitely thought this was going to be about the baby and white walkers as well. That was completely new and Bran's and Jon's storylines are diverting from the book. Knowing how closely GRRM has worked with the producers/writers and that he's told them how things will end up in the end, I'm withholding judgment. It threw me for sure though.

  • **I have not read Dances with Dragons***

Two of the storylines that really drew me in beginning with reading the books were the direwolves and the white walkers, and I felt like these threads were kind of abandoned, or were in a future book.  I was kind of suprised to see the white walkers taking such a pivotal role in the show, and I really hope that they play a larger role with the upcoming books.

  • I think maybe by bringing Bran into Craster's keep the tv guys might be trying to organize a Bran/Jon reunion, which would be good for TV. Much more interesting the Bran's ACTUAL storyline, IMHO.  However, since it isn't in the books, I have no idea wtf will happen with that.

  • I really worry that the show will get ahead of the books. We were talking about this over the weekend, but we speculated it might happen during or after the next book.

With the latest episode, I'm now becoming quite concerned that it's already starting to happen!
