I am sure you ladies have heard on the news/espn etc about the Clippers Owner Donald Sterling and his private conversation being recorded and blasted. I was wondering your thoughts on how this was handled and if you feel it is right? Wrong? All of it. I think he is a bigot and an awful person and that he should have faced some type of reprimand, but I think the NBA has started down a very slippery slope.

I also feel like he can sue for being recorded without his permission so I wonder what will ultimately happen

Definitely. I do not agree with what he said. But also, I don't think that something he said in private should be put on blast this huge. This guy has always had racism things goin on and nothing ever happened then. SO why now? This chic who recorded him, I feel, is more in the wrong. You can't record someone without them knowing, in California. Just wrong. The whole thing isn't right Him being banned, I think is a bit much. He will sue definitely.

This is one story I haven't followed too closely. I can't believe we're still dealing with this crap. I mean, I know racism exists, but I can't believe that people are as open about it as they are. It's 2014, FFS.

One of my FB friends who is a sportswriter had this to say which I thought was pretty spot-on:

It's only a matter of time before you hear someone say "But...but...what about free speech?'' in regard to the Donald Sterling case.
Once again, folks: free speech means the government can't throw you in jail for saying something stupid, or racist. But it DOESN'T mean there aren't other consequences.

Yes, so yes. Every year I feel like I give the "What freedom of speech really means" speech to my students even though I'm not a social studies teacher.

The reason why nothing happened to him before with all the other crap he did was because Stern was the commissioner for the past 30 years and didn't do anything. Useless human being, in my opinion. I think it's great that Silver took a stand and made it clear that treating players that are making him huge money this way is not and will not be acceptable.

Things like this SHOULD be put on blast this huge. They should NOT be overlooked. The fact that you are suggesting that it shouldn't be on blast is making me side eye you. His girlfriend recorded him because she was sick of his antics.

And even if she did break the law, who cares? Maybe he'll sue her, but what is a billionaire going to gain from that? Maybe she gets charged - ok - she'll get probation. Worth it for the greater good.

I'm glad she did it and that action was finally taken against him, but this wasn't her reasoning. She's being sued by his wife and it's likely for revenge or a blackmail attempt in which he called her bluff.

Hadn't heard that bit! No matter what her reasoning, I still back her decision to out him and I'm glad he's getting screwed hard over this. He can hang out with Paula Dean in the layer of hell reserved for bigots.

I also think the girlfriend orchestrated the recording to get revenge on him.

But if he didn't have that opinion, she wouldn't have been able to do it.

I am surprised but impressed that such a harsh sentence was handed down. I don't know if they'll be able to make him sell the team or not, because his wife owns 50% and these sanctions don't affect her. I foresee a lengthy battle.

I DO think that the lifetime ban was the one thing he'll hate the most, since he apparently likes to sit courtside, etc, as a prestige thing - so I like the ban.
