I was cautious going into this book.  I loved the Harry Potter series and was incredibly disappointed with The Casual Vacancy, so I've been putting off reading The Cuckoo's Calling for a while (hence why it seems like everyone but me has read it).  I was greatly relieved.  I enjoyed this book quite a lot.  It started off a bit slow but once the pace picked up it was a very engaging mystery.  I like the way Rowling creates characters, though her real strength is world building which she didn't get to do in this contemporary mystery.   I think if she'd been able to keep under the cover of her pseudonym she would have had a nice little mystery franchise.  Nothing groundbreaking and certainly no Harry Potter, but definitely something I would pick up at the airport before a long flight.  I gave it 4 stars on Goodreads.

  • Glad to hear this, I have the same feelings as you toward Harry potter and the casual vacancy so I was hesitant to pick this one up too. I think I will give it a try!!

  • I was nervous to read it too after I gave up on The Casual Vacancy but I ended up really enjoying it.  I loved the characters and the mystery was quite engaging.  I hope she writes a follow-up.
