OBX Trip - Halfway stop?

Ladies, I know this has been discussed, but I can't remember the suggested stop for a trip to the OBX. Anyone have a suggestion? Thanks! We are going in August.

We usually stop in Charlotte, NC.
  • Richmond..it's about 5.5 hours to Richmond, restaurants/hotels/history and then just 3 hours to OBX. You can also do Kings Dominion just north of Richmond or Williamsburg/Busch Gardens just to the east.

If you're just looking for a quick stop, Fredericksburg is about halfway.

  • Ditto Richmond. We used to live there, so we stop and visit friends and often take time to go to Busch Gardens.

I'm really curious how Charlotte is on the way to OBX, we have family in Charlotte and they all go to South Myrtle (which is also quite nice but far from here) because they claim it's a pain to get to the OBX from there

Where did you live in Richmond? I spent 5 years there...2 in Carytown (behind Ukrops by the post office) and 3 in Henrico (off Horsepen)

We have stopped in Fredericksburg, VA but this year we are planning to go further this year like Richmond.
  • DH grew up there and went to VCU, I lived in Lexington when I was a kid and then went to VA Tech, then I moved to New Orleans, and then Richmond. We lived in the West End for a little bit, then out by Virginia Center Commons, and out in Mechanicsville for a while. Then we lived in Chicago for 2 years and we've been here about 2 years now. We both miss it a lot, we've talked about moving back to Fredericksburg to be between RVA and DC.

Forget Charlotte.  That's where we stop when we go to Hilton Head.  We usually just drive straight through to OBX.  Sorry.
  • I was hoping you knew some secret way to get there from Charlotte so we could make the IL's go with us. ;-)

How ironic! I did my med school at VCU. I left in June 2008. I had a great friend who lived in VCC. Sometimes, I really miss the West End...it's the one reason we moved to Cranberry bc Cranberry gave that West End feel. I babysat for a ton of West End families. I could never move back...it was painfully hot there!!

Based on where you lived, I figured you must have been involved at VCU somehow ;-) I finished my PhD in Health Administration there in 2009. Did you know a girl named Veronica Sikka? I think she graduated med school in 2009, she was also working on a health admin degree. We really thought about Cranberry too for that exact reason but DH travels a lot for work and it's too far from the airport :-\
  • Thanks, all!
  • We've done Fredericksburg & Richmond but the last time went all the way to Chesapeake.  A bit further the first day but it took less than 2 hours Saturday am so we missed all traffic and were on the beach by 10.  We'll do that again this year.

  • Yes! Veronica was in my class the 1st 3 years (I graduated in 07) but I think Veronica stayed to finish MHA.  Did you know Dan Barrett?  He also was my class but then stayed a year to do his MHA (class of 2008)

  • She stayed to do a PhD as well, she was in my cohort and we had all of our classes together! I did meet Dan at least once or twice, but I think by the time he was at the Grant house I was done with my course work and not around very much. What a strange small world!
