This is a book that I would only pick up because of heavy recommendation - when a book keeps coming up with 4-5 stars in my GR feed, was loved on NBC, etc. I've enjoyed letter-style books and historical fiction books before, neither would fall into my go-to books although they're not totally out of my comfort zone.
I know I've said several times that I don't like to read books about cheating, especially when it's shown in a positive light. Can a book with cheating be done well? If so, this is a perfect example. Iain is a very minor character, and nearly ignores Elspeth to the point where they don't take much part in each other's lives any longer. I wanted for Elspeth to be with David, especially after Iain joins the war effort and never comes home on leave, and Lara leaves David. Part of what helps with this is the viewpoint - you only see Elspeth and David's brief communications, which are at times months apart, but the only insight you have to Elspeth's life with Iain is what she chooses to share with David. There is always more to the story.
I thought that Margaret was David's daughter, and after reading the letter where she said she was 'no longer pregnant' I went back and counted the months from their last encounter. That I saw coming. Having David meet Iain in the camp, or Iain's response to David, I didn't see coming. I didn't think that Iain was dead, I thought he would show up eventually, but I didn't realize that he saw David as a rival, or that David was the reason for his non-contact with Elspeth.
Iain left before Elspeth and David had ever met outside of letters. If he would have had the tenacity that he had when he got home, to intercept letters and write David to tell him not to write anymore, the love would never have blossomed between the two. David would have married Lara, and Iain and Elspeth would have meandered on as they were. The ending was sweet and was the HEA I wanted.
I gave this one 4 stars. I really liked it, and would definitely recommend it.

Re: Reading Lottery: Letters from Skye (SP)
Did you read or it or listen to it? The audio was so wonderful. The narrators and particularly the accents were phenomenal.

@SnShine322 - I read it on my kindle, borrowed from my library. There wasn't an audio copy available, and since I don't have much of a commute, I definitely finished it faster by reading than by listening.
