NMMR: Buying Smart Phones

Technically, this is NMMR. But, the tech board isn't very active.

DH and I are probably going to get smart phones in a month or so. We have Verizon as our wireless company and we love them so we won't be changing. But, I see ads for smart phones at Best Buy, Costco, and other stores. Is it advantageous to buy the phone somewhere besides Verizon, or does that complicate the cell plan? Should we buy them at Verizon and not worry about it?

Thanks.

Re: NMMR: Buying Smart Phones

  • I've been buying all our phones at best buy. It's usually cheaper (instant savings vs mail in rebate), they don't push a bigger/newer plans, and I haven't been charged a $30 upgrade fee. I have Verizon. They can move all your numbers over, and everything.

I bought my iphone at Verizon when I switched law firms - it was the best price at the time - $50 cheaper than the Verizon store.

Also check Target.  They were slightly cheaper than Best Buy right before I switched firms and then their prices went up higher than Best Buy's after my switch.

Prices on phone fluctuate a lot, so if the phone you want drops in price at any of those places, I would grab it.

EDIT: I meant to say I bought my phone at BEST BUY, not Verizon.  Sorry - early morning brain.

This is where I buy all my phones.  I can't remember about the upgrade fee though.

Yea I didn't think we did last summer when we got our new phones. My dad just got his new one at best buy and still no upgrade fee. He's on our account.

  • This is the first time I haven't gotten my phone from Verizon. I did Best Buy. Got the phone for free adn still had the upgrade charge but it was billed by Verizon. I looked into Costco and almost went that way until I say my phone for free.

  • we are with tmobile and I just want to buy the 5c full price without having to finance it in my plan.  Is that something you can do at best buy?  I always thought when you bought a phone at those stores that you had to sign up for a plan at that time.

We switched to t-mobile last year (hate it, and will be switching to something else next April).  I looked into Best Buy, but Best Buy doesn't do the month-to-month plans with T-mobile (at least they didn't last year).  They do the contract plans though.

I will have to check it out.  I'm in need of a new phone.  My current iPhone is the iPhone 4 and it was hacked so I could use it on tmobile.  That was 3 years ago before tmobile carried iPhones.

  • I got my phone at Best Buy. I would just decide what phones you want, and then shop around for the best price. Best Buy had a $100 instant rebate that week, so my iphone 5C was like $50. It really doesn't complicate things, they can sign you up/transfer/update your plan or do whatever you need at the other stores too.
