Progesterone Question

Tell me about trying to increase progesterone naturally?

The last 3 cycles I've started spotting at 7DPO.  This cycle and the last cycle it's been almost period like and requires the minimum of a pantyliner.  So I want to try a few things to see if they make a difference with the spotting.  Not sure if this is from low progesterone, but my IF OB and the RE both think that's the reasoning.  We aren't TTC, so it doesn't really matter, but if I can get my body somewhat fully normal and attempt different things and see how it responds in the meantime.  Then I might as well try.

So I know there's been talk about baby aspirin.  How much and how often.  Anything else you would recommend besides that?

Re: Progesterone Question

  • I'm not sure that baby aspirin helps with progesterone. I've never heard that one.

Things I do know about low progesterone:
-it would cause a slow post-o rise rather than a quick jump (same for the drop right before your period)
    -rocky post-o temps
    -spotting in your LP
    -short LP

    Is your cholesterol low?
Tried B6 (helps build your lining which produces the progesterone)?
There are also natural progesterone creams. I'd do more research though before considering their use.

  • @looneylife My cholesterol was in the normal range for both good and bad.  The only thing off was my testosterone and it was definitely high.

This cycle and last cycle it's borderline calling 8 or 9DPO, CD1 for the next cycle.  But then AF truly comes around 14DPO and there's a definite difference in that compared to the spotting/AF that is here from 7DPO - 13DPO.  If that makes sense.
Maybe my LP truly is shorter, but I'm just not logging it because of the noticeable difference once AF really comes.  My temp also doesn't drop until 14DPO, so that's why I don't mark it as CD1 either.  I keep holding out until the real AF and my temp is dropping.

  • I don't know how to increase it naturally. But I am on baby aspirin a day per my RE. It isn't for progesterone, and I having been spotting on and off since about 8DPO as well. The baby aspirin is meant more for preventing clots and helping implantation per my RE. So, since you are TTA, I think baby aspirin is not the answer you're looking for.

  • Acupuncture, if that is something you're interested in/can afford.

My post-o temps were always slow rising until I did acu. I had a nice steep increase in the first month of treatment.

  • @flamingo86 Once we start TTC again my plan is to do acu.  That way hopefully won't need as much assistance in staying pregnant, if possible.

I'm going to do some more research on the progesterone lotion and see if I can find enough guidance to feel comfortable trying it.

I had low progesterone and a really short LP where I would start spotting around 8DPO and then get AF at 10DPO. I recommend taking the B-complex vitamin, not just a b6 vitamin, that way you don't throw the other vitamins out of wack and a B-complex helps with other things as well. Taking the B-complex did help with the spotting and did push back AF a day or two.

With the baby aspirin, do you take one/day for every day or just during specific times in your cycle?

I take one a day every day right now per them. But baby aspirin is not something to mess with. It should only be started as a daily regimen with a doctor's recommendation as it can cause havoc with your intestines if you're on meds for other things. Ex. my RE said I can't take advil/tylenol or anything like it within 2 hours of taking the aspirin because of possible side effects.

I think if anyone is interested in trying this to help with things, just ask your RE. Oh, and if they start you on it, be prepared to bruise more easily and bleed a little longer. I knew this, but damn those daily blood draws would some times do a number on my arms!

  • I took it daily, but I took it on the advice of my RE. It's a blood thinner, so it can cause a whole slew of other issues, so it's not something to take lightly. Definitely talk to your RE about it if you think it'll help.
