Antidepressents

Anyone care to share their experience?

I debated whether or not to share all of this here, but I have been seeing a therapist and we decided it may benefit me to try medication for some depression/anxiety issues I've had, much of it related to 3T/loss.

My psychiatrist put me on Celexa 10mg. He warned me that it could cause some nausea at first, but I was not prepared for what came: violent puking all night long. I missed work today and still feel terrible.

I am currently waiting to hear back from the office about what to do next. Im afraid to take more and be super sick again.

I'm so discouraged. I do believe it could help me, but I also can't deal with horrible side effects.

I know there are other ladies here who take meds for anxiety/depression. Anyone have encouragement?

I don't personally take anything, but I've seen friends struggle through finding the right medication or combination of medications for them. It can take a while, I'm not going to lie. BUT you and your doctor will work this out, and it will make you feel better. Please don't let this discourage you from continuing to try! [With this medication or with others, depending on what your doctor says] I'm sorry that attempt 1 had such craptastic results.  ((hugs))

  • I'm sorry you have had a bad experience on this type.  Just remember that as with all medications, each one can affect you differently.  So just because this one didn't work out well doesn't mean the next one will not.

Hopefully your Dr can find another one for you to try and it will have less side affects.  I've also heard of decreasing the dosage to combat the affects.

Hugs to you dear.  You get a lot of credit for seeing someone and doing what is needed for your mental health.

  • I've been on Prozac since November. It took a couple of weeks to become effective, but it has helped me SO much. In my case it's for anxiety rather than depression. My doctor said that Prozac was more weight-neutral, so it was for me since I'm petite. I haven't had any side effects. The medication calmed me down enough that I was able to do other therapeutic things to address my mental health and develop better coping skills. I'm hoping that I can go off the medication in the future, but if I find that I can't manage the anxiety without the meds, I wouldn't think twice about going back on them.

  • Yuck! Did you call your doc and tell him/her about the puking? If not, I'd do that before taking it again.. just in case. Hopefully it was just a random bug vs the meds.

I am not on a daily med now, but I was in the past. More for anxiety, but same type of drugs. Don't be discouraged. It can take awhile to find "your" med. I went through several before I found one that worked for me. The first one, Paxil, made me feel like crap at first then made me feel like a zombie. The second one, Zoloft, made me feel like my veins were burning. It was awful.. I only took it one time. The third one, Lexapro, was the magic one that worked. And it may take several weeks, even months, to get the full effect. I was on the first med for a good 6-8 weeks before I decided it sucked. The third one took about the same amount of time to fully kick in. Later on, I also tried Celexa but it was at that point I decided I was ready to quit meds (with the exception of the occasional Xanax, which I still take here and there) so I never fully got on it. Some had worse side effects but I really think I had at least mild ones with all of the meds at first.

Hang in there. Finding the right medication is hard,  but it'll be worth it. I applaud you for getting help :) It was the best decision I ever made and truly turned my darkest days around <3

  • I am currently on Celexa and it has helped me sooooooooooooooo much. I've been on it for years and it is a tool that I need (in conjunction with talk therapy) that eases my severe anxiety. It's not a miracle drug, you still have to work for it, but it can seriously help.

I tried a few before I found that Celexa worked. Effexor and Zoloft both eased my anxiety but also eased all my other emotions, too. On the Celexa, I know it works because I still feel like myself. I have good days, bad days, stomp my feet days, etc. I just know how to handle the highs and lows better. And based on what's going on in my life, my dosage has changed from time to time.

I would recommend to give the Celexa a little more time. If you get that violently ill again, definitely look into it, but it might get better. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions/want to chat. I've been on this rodeo a few times! ;-)

How long have you been taking it? I would definitely call your doctor regardless, but it take about 4-6 weeks to get in your system. Sometimes side effects that you experience in those weeks go away (though sometimes they don't). Like most people said, there is no cure all medication for everyone. Unfortunately, it may take some time and a couple different meds to find what works best for you. I work with a lot of psychiatrists and am used to a lot of these meds. If you ever have any questions, let me know!

Takes a while to find the right one for you. I never did.

Just a warning, which probably doesn't apply to you yet since you just started, but may help you later on.... Don't stop cold turkey. Follow your doctor's instructions. I learned that one the hard way.
  • Thanks everyone. I've only been taking it a few days. I felt queasy at first and then terribly ill. However, DH says he is feeling queasy so maybe it's a stomach virus.

Dr. said to wait until my stomach calms down and then try taking it again. Maybe over the weekend when I don't have to go anywhere if I feel gross.

  • Mine is PR:

I was diagnosed with postpartum anxiety.  I had huge anger issues and I got SO irritated at my husband for things he was doing (and he was doing nothing wrong).  Sometimes I would even get annoyed at things that Parker did (and he's a baby for God's sake...he certainly wasn't doing anything wrong!)  It's like I made huge mountains out of molehills in my brain.  I wondered if I had PPD, so I went to a psychiatrist that my friend recommended.  I was started on Lexapro and it's been great.  I haven't had any side effects from it at all.  Lexapro and Zoloft are the best tolerated.  I would also ask about Zoloft, because it is safe for TTC, pregnancy, and BFing,

OMG yessssss.  I ran out and didn't call my doctor for a script right away.  I was dizzy, nauseous, felt like crap.  And I kept getting these things called "brain zaps."  It was so. weird.

Absolute yes to both of these points. Omg PB&F, I wonder if your "brain zaps" were like mine were! They were awful and that is a perfect description! Anyway, definitely do NOT go cold turkey. I did twice and both times were horrible and after the second time, my doctor got seriously pissed at me because I was so miserable and it was my own fault.

All my coworkers and my preceptor were giving me shit because I'm a nurse and I'm in school to be a nurse practitioner and I know better than to just stop them, and I have to tell patients this all the time!  I'm sure my psychiatrist will give me a lecture, too.

First, I hope it was just a bug!!  I have been on a medication that has made me nauseous to the point of vomiting, but usually it was just the once within an hour or so of taking the medication.

Second - please please please do not stop taking the medication without consulting your doctor first, even though it sounds like you just started.  As PPs have said, there can be serious side effects.

I am currently on a low dose of generic Effexor and Latuda.  It's working really well for me.  Latuda is actually the medication that has made me nauseous / vomit, but that could be alleviated by eating about an hour to a half hour before hand, at least 300 - 400 calories.  Did your doctor suggest taking the Celexa with food?

Also like PPs have said, it can take a while to find the right antidepressant (or combination thereof) for you, and it can be discouraging.  It took me a long time, but now I'm in a really good place - it's so worth it to find the right medications.

  • It's also important to remember that it can take up to 6 weeks to feel the full effects of the antidepressant.  I felt better after a couple weeks, but it does take time for the medications to start being effective enough to notice a difference.  So if the stomach thing passes (which I hope it does!), don't give up hope, keep taking it for a few weeks before maybe changing.

No worries:) I had literally only taken 2 pills and the dr. Said that since I had started so recently and am on such a low dose that it's okay to hold off starting again until I'm feeling better.

  • I used to take lexapro for anxiety (flip side of the same coin). Other than some headaches, I don't remember any side effects. Maybe he can try you on a different med. extreme vomiting doesn't sit right with me.
