I haven't been to a play in NYC since 2009 but in my experience the locals wear jeans (I've been more in the cold weather).  It seems to me that New Yorkers do not consider going to the theater a dressy occasion.  This surprised me because I wouldn't consider wearing jeans to see a play at the Benedum.

If the weather is nice in a few weeks you will have a lot of options.  Pick something that you feel you look good in.  For me, at this time in the year I would go with a summer dress.  In the colder weather I would wear nice jeans, shoes and a sweater.  Either way I would try to look nice and somewhat trendy but not necessarily dressed up.

Jeans to the theater?!?!  What has the world come to.

  • It's really an anything goes kind of thing.  The first time I was in NYC in college, my roommate and I were fretting about not really being dressed appropriately for the show we got tickets for.  This lovely older woman behind us said "Don't worry about it!  You are young, you are beautiful - just be confident and you're fine".   (Said almost like how Linda Richman from SNL would have said it).  So since you are young and beautiful, I'd agree with a nice summer dress that makes you feel great!
  • Oh how fun!

I would definitely opt to wear something nicer, like a summer dress and sweater, rather than jeans. I guess it depends - if the show was in the afternoon and you're just being touristy afterwards, nice jeans and a top would suffice. But an evening show - definitely dressier. And then go out for a nice dinner, too!

  • Since the theater is so popular in NY, it's like going to the movies so rarely is it really dressy. I spent a month in London going to 25 different performances and jeans was definitely London dressy too!

I would wear a cute summer dress, a cardigan and sandals/flats.

  • Ditto summer dress, cardigan and flats. You can go dressier for fun, but it isn't necessary.

  • Thank you ladies! I didn't want to be under dressed and was leaning towards wearing a summer dress anyway so that sounds safe.  We are having a nice dinner before too!  Should be a nice date night!
  • Unless you wear sweat pants you won't be under dressed. Like Kristen said, it's like going to the movies for New Yorkers, so you see a lot of jeans.

  • Fun, enjoy the show!!!

We go to one or two Broadway shows a year. We just saw If/Then when we were up last month. It is truly anything goes. You see people walking in straight from sight seeing in t-shirts and jeans, and people that are in suits.

I usually dress Steve in khakis and a dress shirt, and I wear a dress. I enjoy an excuse to get dressed up and look nice. We usually eat somewhere beforehand. Hitting 9th/10th ave you miss a lot of the touristy spots, but are still close enough to the theaters to walk to the show after dinner.
