MM brain not working

for work I use a MacBook Air with a thunderbolt display, and I love it! I can multi-task on 2 screens, or at least avoid a lot of clicking between documents or I can close the laptop and just work on the 27" screen.

For the most part my work is something that can be done at home, and many days I'll head home early to beat traffic and finish the work-day from home. however, I do feel that I loose productivity when I only have my 13" screen to work from. it would cost approximately $1000 to outfit my home with the same set-up (27" screen, keyboard and mouse). part of me feels like if I'm going to spend the money I should "do it right" and get exactly what I want. the other part thinks that I could find a smaller and/or non-apple screen that would get the job done and maybe only cost $500-600 with the apple keyboard and smart mouse.

I have also taken on a volunteer position with the NFP ballet company I am on the board of directors for, and I'm creating digital media (photos, videos etc, with music overlay) and having a nice big display to work on would be super helpful.

This is not something we've budgeted for, other projects that I've mentioned we have found the funds for.  I do have the roughly 2 dozen savings bonds I've mentioned before that we have not allocated to anything and would more than cover this purchase.

thoughts? what would you do?

Re: MM brain not working

  • I totally get this as we have two monitors at home but I only have 1 at work. So I'm reverse of your situation. Can you sell/trade in any of your old computer equipment/monitors or other older eletronics to help fund this? I know best buy takes trade in on old computers.
  • I'm very pro mac so I'm not going to talk you out of that.  You can however check craigslist and probably find one for a reasonable amount of money.

  • agreed, definitely pro-mac (I started with the apple2 and I've never owned anything else). and for the photo/video work it's hard to beat the graphics.

I'll check craigslist, our area often doesn't have a lot.  amazon is also an option.

I don't really have old computers that are worth anything (iBook G4?). but that's a great suggestion.
