When won't you wear jeans?

As a kind of a spin off from the what to wear to the NYC theater thread, where won't you wear jeans because they are too casual?

I would never wear jeans to a funeral, wedding, shower, Pittsburgh theater (Benedum or large theater not necessarily the smaller ones), or fancy restaurant.

I grew up not being allowed to wear jeans to Sunday church.  As an adult I have once or twice but generally speaking I don't wear jeans to Sunday church.  Contemporary Saturday service is another story :)

I haven't ever worn jeans to a funeral visitation but I wouldn't say never on that because if it is a matter of fitting the visit into a busy day it might happen.

Re: When won't you wear jeans?

  • I would probably have the same list that you do.

I'm spoiled in that I work in a really laid back environment when it comes to clothes, standard around here is really business casual, jeans on Fridays (or today for me, since I'm off tomorrow, I made today my Friday ;) ) Since I'm not super dressy every day, I don't mind having to step it up a bit for fun occasions out like showers or the theater.

  • I think my list is similar to yours - church included.  I would also add jury duty or any other court appearance.  Some people do wear jeans to my church (I'm Methodist), but it feels wrong to me.  I don't wear my "Sunday best", but I won't wear jeans either.  Like Emmy, our office is very relaxed and I can wear jeans whenever I feel like it, so it is nice to get dressed up on occasion.
  • Pretty much the same list as everyone else, although I have probably worn jeans once or twice to church or to a nicer restauraunt.  In those cases I always accessorized with a dressy top, jewelry, etc. so I don't feel as if I am dressing down.

My list is pretty much the same. I did wear jeans to the funeral home once and it felt so wrong. I had brought clothes and we went as a group in the afternoon and the girls thought I was crazy for wanting to change.

I have worn jeans to church but that was usually in winter when it was super sloppy out.

I will say that I judge hard when people are inappropriately dressed for events. We went to brunch at my parents' golf club on Sunday (which is no jeans except for Fridays in the fall/winter) and so many people in jeans and tee shirt it was ridiculous and we are talking pricey jeans and affliction t-shirt.  The people they were with will definitely get a letter in the mail. My parents were always sticklers for being dressed appropriate for situations.

  • Same as everyone else's list. I tend to stick to the 'better over dressed than under dressed' rule and Tim is s-l-o-w-l-y seeing it my way. He always defaults to jeans.

  • Pretty much same as everyone else.  I do wear jeans to church, but a darker wash.  Also on my list are holidays.  Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter.  Even if we are going to my inlaws' house, where they do not dress up.  I just have to dress up;  I can't wear jeans on a major holiday.

  • So what do you ladies think about colored jeans? I have two pairs, one turquoise and the other coral. I wore the coral ones last Sunday to church with a shell and cardigan and felt I was dressed up and perfectly acceptable. I would even wear them to a shower, but not a wedding or fancy restaurant.

I'm hoping to buy a pair of turquoise colored jeans this year, and I intend to wear them to work (and not as a jeans day) because I think they look dressy.  So I'd say yes, I would also wear them to church :)

Colored jeans I am eh about. I would still not wear them to a shower or church.

I tend to go with colored khakis or ankle pants over jeans in the summer and colored cords in the fall/winter. One, I find them more comfortable, two I can wear them to work.

I have a similar list to everyone else.

The funeral home thing really gets me. I just did two days of viewings for my grandfather. I was so frustrated that a few of my younger cousins, who were there for the viewings, felt it was perfectly fine to be there in ripped jeans and tank tops. My head was spinning. Another cousin wore a dress with cutouts on both sides that exposed her stomach. I didn't find that appropriate for the occasion either--it looked like a dress you'd wear to go clubbing.

The one cousin was a pall bearer the next day, and thank god he put on a suit for that, but he seriously changed back into ripped jeans and a t-shirt before we went to the funeral luncheon. He's 10 years younger than me. Have things really changed that much?

I want colored jeans so I can trick work into thinking I am wearing pants but am really wearing jeans too!

Jeans fit better than any other kind of pants. In fact, I HATE pants. See also: I need to be doing lunges and squats, etc. :)
  • I don't have a problem with people wearing jeans to church.  But I hate seeing the teenage girls in ripped jeans, shorty short shorts, and skimpy tank tops.

  • I also despise real pants.  If I must be out of my PJs/sweats/yoga pants, then I'd prefer jeans over anything else.

Ugh, seriously! My dad's uncle died earlier this year and I was appalled at the things people wore. You can get an inexpensive dress at Target, Wal-Mart or Kohl's that is appropriate. Hell, I wore a black dress I got for $10 at Kohl's with tights and a sweater. But like i said before, my parents were and still are sticklers for being appropriately dressed for situations. Everyone should have a pair of dark pants and a button down. It isn't that hard.

When DH's friend's wife passed away his son who is my age never wore a suit because "he didn't have time to get one" DH told him he could get one at Target and that he should really do that to show respect. He didn't, he wore the same white shirt, no tie, and khakis for three days. Now, my husband wears jeans and t-shirts and still dresses appropriately for events.

And seriously, how hard is it to leave on a suit for a half day?!?

  • I will join the I hate pants club!

Personally I wouldn't wear them to funeral or wedding. But honestly I think nice dark wash well fitting jeans can look better than a lot of other non-jean attire people wear. Sure, ripped jeans are really not appropriate a lot of places but I love a nice trouser jean or just classic dark rinse jean.

I usually wear a nice pair of jeans during the week with a blazer. I look more dressed up than a lot of people who aren't wearing jeans. Fridays I wear something a little more casual with jeans. We are very casual office though.

  • Confession:  The main reason I wont' wear jeans to church is because I'm afraid my mother will find out.  She doesn't attend that church.  But I know I'd get the "oh.  So you wore jeans to church today?  Hmmm."   I am a 40 year old woman who's afraid of her mother.  I also think it's the reason why I'm probably the only person in the year 2014 who wears a slip - because she'll know if I'm not!

I wear a slip all the time. It prevents things being see through (girl in yellow dress last week that I could totally tell what style of underwear she was wearing) and it prevents static issues. And you are not alone, tons of girls on my Style & Beauty board wear them, there have even been in-depth discussions about them!

Real dress/suit pants do suck but Gap makes the most wonderful broken-in khakis, BR makes great ankle pants and my most favorite pants are my J.Crew Minnies, stretchy dress pants with only a zipper.  But to each their own.

Kris how do the Minnie fit? I love the look but I have huge legs/calf when compared to the rest of me, ha! I like the slim fit ankle pant look but can't find any that fit my calves! I tried on ON pixie pants and they were skin right on my legs. This is why I hate pants! Too hard to find a good fit for me especially when so much is going slim/straight/skinny fit

  • Amber I wear a slip. My mom never instilled that in me but it's definitely a great idea. Too many possibilities for a mishap!

I don't any any ON pants, I tried in the past but after washing them they are gross so I would rather spend a little more. Minnies are fitted, not as tight as leggings but definitely a slim fit. The J.Crew Pixie is more of a legging.

My Minnies are 4, I wear a 6 in BR, and a 4 or 6 in Gap depending on the style. Minnies are stretchy, so while they may feel tight initially they will stretch so do not size up if you can zipper them. But they don't stretch so much you have to clean them after every wash. I have wore my navy one at least 5 times and my black ones 3 and they are good. They are dry clean only, my sister washed hers an she said they shrunk but others said they was them with no issues.

Here is me in them on Monday, please don't mind the selfie!

Banana Republic Sloan-Fit are similar but have a zipper and button.

  • Thanks Kris! So cute on you. I fear they will not look right on me! Ha! I need to just see if they have my size in store to try on. I hate ON pants too but the pixie looked so cute online. But they do not work for my legs!

I find this for EVERYTHING at Old Navy! I get these emails and every thing is so cute then I go to the store and am disappointed every time. My sister laughs at me and ask why I continue to torture myself. I do luck out that one of my sisters works for J.Crew and she get an amazing discount.

Sounds like a nice church outfit.  The places where I waver (like church) I think it is a little less about being formal and more about being respectful.  Putting on a nice outfit and taking the time with your appearance can still be respectful while wearing jeans.
