Not MMR - What are your summer plans?

I'm stuck home all week with this horrible chest cold and will be going to the doctor today.  I hate that I had to cancel lessons today.  I always feel horrible about that.  Anyways, I need some entertainment.  What are you guys doing this summer?

We will be leaving for sanibel island at the end of june thru july 4th weekend.  A friend of ours is getting married on the beach and I'm so excited to take DD with us since she has never been on a beach before.  DD will be starting swim lessons again this June and I'm thinking of putting her in dance class to see how she likes it.  Wedding season has started and June will be insanely busy.  We are booked every weekend and are actually tripled booked 2 saturdays that month.  DH is working on buying some property downtown to build his studio.  Hopefully we will hear back soon from his letter of intent to buy it.  I'm also planning on enjoying our patio as much as possible.  The hummingbird feeders are out and we already have a male and female hanging around.

I'm taking Monday off, and H and I are having a long weekend at the beach this weekend.  Some friends of ours have a family beach house down in Seaside, FL - it's completely ridiculous: 5 bedroom house on a private beach.  We've never seen more than a dozen people on that beach in all the years we've been going.  The best part is it's a really cheap trip for us because we can stay there for free.

Then H's bar exam course starts on Tuesday.  He will be doing that until he takes the bar the last week in July.  He gets all of August off, so that's when we're going to London for 10 days.  He starts his job right after Labor Day.

  • Wedding season is definitely coming fast isn't it!? My mom is getting married 8/2, friends on 8/10, and if everything works out with the short sale house we just got mutual acceptance on, it will close 8/5 and we will be doing the painting, new carpets, new hardwood floors etc and probably move in 8/23-8/24 which happens to be our 1 year anniversary (24th). We also want to go camping 4th of July weekend. My husband will be gone a week in July to volunteer at girl's conservation camp. I wish I could go, but I don't think I will be allowed the time off! :( His family started it 60 years ago, and this will be his 5th year volunteering in a row. I just plan to work as much as I can with my 2nd job so we can have money for all the fixing up we want to do on the new house. I'll be quitting at the end of July though because it's about an hour away from our new house and won't be worth the drive unless I worked over 7 hours a shift, and that seems too much when I already work 40 hours a week.

I hope you feel better soon!

  • We're boring and don't really have any plans for the summer.

My parents and in-laws have both said that they want to come visit us, but neither of them have confirmed dates yet so we're trying to keep things open. We're flying to Colorado next week to go to my brother's high school graduation, but that's about all we have planned. I'd really like to go visit DH's family in Panama City sometime this summer if we can get all our schedules to work out. That's usually a cheap trip for us since we can stay with his cousins for free.

I also have my heart set on either going to Savannah this summer or spending a few days in the North GA mountains. I have yet to explore that part of the state and really want to go. I saw some cabin rentals for pretty cheap, and I would love to go rafting and ziplining up there, we just can't decide whether we should go by ourselves or take our families with us (my brother also love rafting and has never gone ziplining so I think he would have fun).
  • In June, we're doing a long weekend at the Ohio River for his birthday.  H's parents have a place on the river, so we're able to stay there.  His uncle also has a place there, and they'll be down.  I'm sure we'll go out on his uncle's boat.  On his birthday, we're going to a reds game.  That's all we have planned for this summer.
Other than that, we'll probably be riding.  I'll also be working my 2nd job and playing softball.

Summers are generally pretty busy for us.  We live far from family, so we can expect at least 4 separate visits from family for anywhere from 4 - 10 days.  DH has several conferences to attend this summer, so between that and family visits we will have something going on (I include being home alone with the kids as something going on) at least 8 weeks of the summer.  Luckily, one of his trips this summer is to Turkey, and I am hoping to tag along for our first vacation alone since the kids were born.  We're also going to try and squeeze in at least 3 camping trips.  We'll see whether we can make it all work; it sounds pretty ambitious when I type it all out.
  • I'm using up a chunck of my use-ti-or-loose-it vacation time the week of Memorial day, then I'm headed to my 5 year college reunion the first weekend of June, then we're off to Jamaica the last week of June :)

July we've got a family reunion in the middle of the month, and right now August looks pretty tame :)

I'm half busy/half not. I'm planning on staying home Memorial Day weekend and doing nothing but veg out. June 21 is my daughter's ballet recital, June 7 & 8 is Terror Con at the Rhode Island Convention center, and July 4-5 we will be traveling to Pittsfield to visit friends, then staying overnight and traveling to the Times Square area for the day.

We also plan on taking DD to the zoo, beach, and parks any chance we get. I think August will be quiet besides the local traveling (within the hour).

We're going to do some small day trips with the girls- zoo, beach, kids museum, fair, etc. DH and I are going to see the black keys (Thank you citicards for offering pre-sale tickets to your card members- one perk to having a credit card!) in September about 4 hours away. We'll stay the night and stop at IKEA on the way home. Not terribly exciting but we're looking forward to it.

  • So far we don't have anything "fun" planned. Summer usually entails short weekend or day trips for us. The weekend trips involve the use of a free cabin on the ocean with BIL and SIL. :)

However, it definitely is wedding season...We have 1 wedding at the end of this month, 1 in August, and 1 in September. H is in 2 of the weddings and I'm in one....Luckily all 3 weddings are relatively local.

We also move to our new condo (!!!) June 30 so that will keep us busy (and broke! :() for awhile.

I LOVE Sanibel!  It is a family vacation spot for us and my sister and husband got married there.  They went off on their honeymoon and we stayed a week in a condo!  I've never been there in the summer though...  Have fun and get a burger and onion rings at Cheeburger Cheeburger!

We don't have summer plans yet...  We close on the new house next Thursday and we will probably be putting $10-20k into the house this summer.  The kitchen needs some reconfiguring to make it workable, but it looks like we just have to rearrange the cabinets and appliances (we shouldn't have to buy anything new).  We need a new HVAC and my BIL has offered to put it in at cost for us.  We will repay him in free babysitting for their three kids.  LOL  We will need to get some new furniture and depending on the budget at that point we want to update the master bath and install a closet system in the master closet.

We have considered doing a long weekend in Chicago or NYC as a summer getaway, but with the house we haven't made any firm plans yet.  We are saving our vacation money for one last vacation this winter before TTC.
We've never been.  We actually haven't been to the beach in 4 years so I'm very excited about it.  My MIL wants us to come back pregnant. LOL.  Last time we went to Destin 4 years ago and after we got back I found out I was pregnant.  I told her its not happening for another year or so.

  • Can't wait to hear about Sanibel! I've always wanted to go there.

We have our big trip to Bonaire super soon (eeee!) and once we return our goal is home buying! A lot of our favorites have been sitting for a while, so I'm hopeful we'll be in a good bargaining position for something in our favorite neighborhood. This will likely mean laying low most of the summer to hopefully save enough to hire movers. I hate Uhauling it! I'll also plan to get some local diving in. There are surprisingly beautiful things in the waters off New England!

Not sure if it's north GA or not , but 4 years ago we stayed at a cabin in the mountains about an hour or so outside of ATL.  We really enjoyed it and they are affordable.  Ours had a hot tub and sauna. Plus we could use the grill and cook ourselves dinner.  We love staying in cabins.  It's nice to feel like you are out of touch with reality for a little bit of time.

Yeah that would have been N. Ga - Hiawassee, Ellijay, Dahlonega, Blue Ridge, etc.  It's really beautiful up there.  I'm from a small town just west of that area :)

The best parts are right on the GA - NC border.  Lake Chatuge is fabulous.

I'm also a huge fan of Savannah though - really really cool place.  And it's where H and I met!

  • not much planned

We have a concert at the end of the month so we will rent a hotel room by the shore for after that and spend the next day by the ocean.

We plan on doing plenty of bike-riding, kayaking and mini golf

Some barbeques and hanging out at my parents pool

    Doing a few house projects

Going to Virginia in late September to check out the area to see if we really want to move there (we want out of HCOL)

We also just booked a cruise for May 2015 but that's too far away to get excited about now (but boy I can't wait)

Working on my wedding scrap book...I need to get this done and I'm getting there slowly but surely!

You guys have given me all sorts of places to look into checking out now, thanks for the suggestions! My plans for going up there haven't really evolved past the "I just want to go to the mountains" stage, so I'll have to check out some of these towns and see what's available. My job involves is very tech heavy, and I always have to be connected in case a client calls/emails/etc. So I would really just love to unplug for awhile and ignore the real world.

Sanibel is a great island, but the beaches aren't "pretty" as far as clear water and powdery sand.  Be sure to take sturdy flip flops and/or water shoes to protect your feet.  The island is known for its EXCELLENT shelling but I don't know how good the shelling is in the summer as it is normally best in the winter (not sure why).

The Dairy Queen and Cheeburger Cheeburger are the only chain restaurants on the island.  The island wants to keep the "old Florida" feel so new chains aren't allowed to build there.  There are tons of quaint shops for souvenirs but some can get pretty pricey.  There are bike baths everywhere...

Every time we go (and we haven't been in about 3 years) it is as if time stops.  You are instantly relaxed and stress free.  It is awesome.
That sounds like our kind of place!  we had planned on bringing beach shoes.  we don't really care for chain restaurants when we are on vacations.  we like to eat local.
