I accidentally read TFiOS (SPOILERS!!!)

I had been avoiding this one because I don't like to cry. I want happy endings, not teenagers who fall in love and die. But yesterday I was carpooling home from RT with two other authors, and it was my turn to lounge in the backseat. So the conversation went like this:

Me: "Got any books back here?"
Friend: "Just the depressing one that you refuse to read."
Me: "Mind if I take a peek? I just want to get a feel for John Green's voice."
Friend: "Knock yourself out."
Me: <after a page> "Hahaha! The literal heart of Jesus!" <after another page> "Hahaha! Balls!"

I kept reading and reading as we crossed a few state lines. Then I was weeping and snotty and blowing my nose into a tissue I (luckily) found in the bottom of my purse. I can see why TFiOS is popular. It was heartwarming with so many fantastic lines. (I'm particularly fond of Gus's eulogy where he says that we don't have a choice in getting hurt, but we can choose who hurts us. That was beautiful.) But at the same time, I feel kind of shitty for having read it. I don't like books were the MCs die, probably because reading is my escape from the sadness of real life. It was a brilliant book, but not my cuppa. Does that make sense?

Those who've read John Green, which of his other books can you recommend for someone like me? (Or do they all involve death?)

Yes! I worked so hard to avoid having my heart broken, but the voice and wit sucked me in. I wish had made notes of all the lines that made me stop and go, "Wow. This guy is incredibly talented."

  • An Abundance of Katherines is also funny and not sad. Bonus points if you like math.

  • I also liked An Abundance of Katherines, and I don't remember it being sad.

I have been debating a re-read of TFioS prior to the movie, but I just don't know if I want to go there again. It just hurt so good.

  • I'm the exact opposite.  If a book makes me sob, it's the BEST. BOOK. EVER.

Maybe that's why I like his sad books better than Will Grayson, Will Grayson.

I either saw or read an interview with him in which someone asked why he didn't write more funny books, and he said they didn't sell as well as the sad ones. So clearly you are not alone in your love of sobbing! :)

  • Despite the fact that he is incredibly overexposed and in my face all the time, I have so much love for his writing. I think that even the sad books have such wit and humor to them. I mean, I cried like my cousin died over TFIOS, but I laughed a lot too.

I love that you 'accidentally' read it! I highly recommend reading Will Grayson Squared next.

Take a look at the music video Ed Sheeran made for the movie. It has all the lines in it!
