I had been avoiding this one because I don't like to cry. I want happy endings, not teenagers who fall in love and die. But yesterday I was carpooling home from RT with two other authors, and it was my turn to lounge in the backseat. So the conversation went like this:
Me: "Got any books back here?"
Friend: "Just the depressing one that you refuse to read."
Me: "Mind if I take a peek? I just want to get a feel for John Green's voice."
Friend: "Knock yourself out."
Me: <after a page> "Hahaha! The literal heart of Jesus!" <after another page> "Hahaha! Balls!"
I kept reading and reading as we crossed a few state lines. Then I was weeping and snotty and blowing my nose into a tissue I (luckily) found in the bottom of my purse. I can see why TFiOS is popular. It was heartwarming with so many fantastic lines. (I'm particularly fond of Gus's eulogy where he says that we don't have a choice in getting hurt, but we can choose who hurts us. That was beautiful.) But at the same time, I feel kind of shitty for having read it. I don't like books were the MCs die, probably because reading is my escape from the sadness of real life. It was a brilliant book, but not my cuppa. Does that make sense?
Those who've read John Green, which of his other books can you recommend for someone like me? (Or do they all involve death?)
Re: I accidentally read TFiOS (SPOILERS!!!)
my read shelf:
Wes: 10/8/2012
my read shelf:
I'm the exact opposite. If a book makes me sob, it's the BEST. BOOK. EVER.
Maybe that's why I like his sad books better than Will Grayson, Will Grayson.
