Book Recommendations?

Has anyone read anything good lately?  I'm trying to get back into the habit of reading regularly again and could use some suggestions.  I just finished The Fault in our Stars (so I could see the movie, lol) and started reading The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult (which I had started a while ago, but never finished).

Re: Book Recommendations?

  • Loved "the fault in our stars" and enjoyed John Green's other books as well (waiting for alaska and will grayson, will grayson)  Did you read the Divergent series yet?  I just finished it (because I wanted to see the movie, haha!  great minds think alike!)

I'm reading "me before you" by JoJo Moyes right now and it's really good, I also enjoyed "the girl you left behind" by the same author. Did you read "the husband's secret"?  that was another really good one.

  • I read the Storyteller and liked it. I also read Gillian Flynn's book Sharp Objects (didn't like it as much as Gone Girl, but it was fine). I'm going through the Women's Murder Club series right now (picking it back up after a hiatus).
  • Is the Fault in Our Stars something that will make me cry?  Just seeing the commercials makes me think that it is, and I try to stay away from cry movies/books.

I read the first book in the Divergent series and liked it.  (like Emmy I wanted to see the movie).

I just finished the newest Alex Cross book by James Patterson and "I've got you under my skin" by Mary Higgins Clark.  And I just got the newest book by the Kite Runner author (I cant' think of his name right now) from the library for my kindle.
  • I'm in a slump right now! The last book I loved was A Dog's Purpose. Loved it!!

I tried reading Husband's Secret and The Girl you left behind and couldn't get into them. Would need to retry them at some point. I have The Storyteller too but haven't started it.

  • The Fault In Our Stars is tear-inducing, yes.  But I enjoyed it.  I also recommend Tell The Wolves I'm Home by Carol Rifka Brunt (pretty quick read) and Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese (longer read).  I'm working my way through The Goldfinch at the moment and really enjoying it.

Yes I would assume Fault in our stars would make you cry. I avoided it for quite awhile for that reason. But I really did like it despite tears

Amber-yes, it will make you cry.  It will make you cry an ugly, uncontrollable shoulders-heaving, gut wrenching kind of cry.  Just a heads up. But, it was so so so good.  It was one of those books that have really stuck with me, and I read it probably 6 months ago.  Just don't read the end on the bus like I did, if you do decide to read it.  The good news is, apparently, a grown women crying hysterically on a bus going from downtown into Oakland isn't too much of an unusual or alarming site, since no one really seemed to notice.

  • Okay, I kind of thought so.   I'll take everyone's word for it that it's good.
  • So I am apparently a cold hearted witch, because I did not cry at all when I read it.  I didn't even get teary eyed!

:-O  Really?? it wasn't even the very end that got to me (which is why I was caught off guard on the bus), it was about maybe 40 pages before the end?  I don't want to give away too much on here to those who haven't read it.  but a certain part just broke my heart into tiny pieces.

  • I was sad, but no crying.  Maybe because I was prepared for something like that to happen?  I don't know, I am usually a cry baby!!
  • I'm just a few chapters into "Grounded" by Heather Ordover. So far I am enjoying it, though most nights lately I am too tired to read before bed.

I have been wanting to read the sequel to "Wicked", but it has been so long since I read it that I might reread the original book again.

Also, Heather and I are reading "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire". My favorite HP book!

  • I read Grapes of Wrath... and The Painted Girls recently. Enjoyed them both but it took me a little patience to get through the first third of GoW because of how it is written.
