Y_L and anyone else who has read Winger

I'm looking into getting a copy for our library - we have a bunch of girls who are eating up our YA.  I've read all the rave reviews, but they all mention that it's fairly raunchy.  My collection is college-level, but we've also got high school students checking out materials.  Is it something parents would potentially object to and do you think the literary merit outweighs the risk?

  • Will people potentially find it objectionable? Yeah, it's possible. It's a pretty realistic view inside the mind of a teenage boy - complete with cursing, perverted thoughts about sex and what-not. He also has a gay friend who is getting bullied and he is struggling to understand his gay friend, so he thinks a lot about homosexuality and what it means to be a straight guy who has a gay friend. There's also some violence.

I LOVE this book and I think it's fantastic. And I think it can spark some really great discussion. I personally would put it on my own shelf, but I'd probably give kids a heads up about the content if they checked it out.
