Double surname in the professional world

Good afternoon! I need some advice regarding my double barreled last name and my professional resume. Legally my name is "Courtney Jo MaidenName Husband'sName" (no hyphen). I kept my maiden name in my last name because it was important to me, but I rarely use it other than for legal matters. I've begun applying to teaching jobs and I'd rather just use my husband's last name because my legal last name is rather long and I don't want students and faculty to have to call me by a long complicated name. Is it OK for me to submit resumes and introduce myself using just the second half of my last name or must I submit my resume with both names? Has anyone done this and encountered any issues? Thank you!

Re: Double surname in the professional world

  • I don't see any problem with just using your husband's last name for resumes and introducing yourself.  Of course, if you are filling out an application or...even better...new hire forms ;) you would want to use your full name.  I don't an interviewer would even notice (if on application) or ask about it but, if they did, you would just basically explain like you did here that go by XXXX but your full legal name is YYXX.

    Good luck!
