GTKY: Names

Before you got married did your last name get mispronounced? What about your married name?

Re: GTKY: Names

  • My maiden name was mispronounces all the time. Not nearly as much as my first name but it still happened frequently. To this day, people I have worked with for almost 10 years still can't say it correctly.

No one really mispronounces my married name but they can't spell it. I spell it out for people and they read it back incorrectly and I am like No!

  • People pronounced my maiden name wrong all the time and spelling it was even worse. Growing up it was a great way to tell who was a telemarketer! Now there's a reality TV show family with that name so that's helped a little.

They also get my married name wrong, but not as frequently. A lot of people will just pronounce it as another name entirely.

  • My maiden name didn't get mispronounced but it is a girl's first name so I got "why do you have two first names?" a lot. My married name is pretty common so it doesn't get mispronounced but it does get misspelled a lot which always surprises me.

  • Never had problems with my last name. Married or maiden. It's my first name people spell wrong all the time, and every once in a while people would actually call me by a completely different name.

I have a name story from yesterday: we bought our new house. I've been emailing the insurance guy for like 2 weeks now, signed with my full name at the end of every email. He gets the insurance letter back to me yesterday and he has my freaking name spelled wrong. I was not impressed.

  • My maiden name was always wrong. No one could pronounce it or spell it correctly. It was a nightmare even if I said it or spelled it they still would get it wrong.

My married name is much easier except the spelling. It's a common name but it is spelled weird. So I always tell people and then spell it for them.
  • My maiden name was pretty easy but still people messed it up always adding letters.

My married name is super easy and I love having it, no one asks how to spell it or say it!

  • My maiden name was always mispronounced. I thought my married name would be easier for people to pronounce, but I am wrong. Even people in my husband's family pronounce my married name differently. Oh well. I don't even correct people any more.

  • My maiden name was always butchered.  It's a 10 letter long Slovak monster name, so no real surprise.  My full married name (first middle and last) is now shorter than just my maiden last name.  7 letters vs 10

My married name is hit or miss.  For some reason people like to change it from Cox to Fox all the time.

  • Oh gosh yes. My maiden name is Czechoslovakian. Its pronounced a little different in English to make it easier to say. But in Czech its pronounced differently
if your on my FB you would probably know what I'm talking about

And my married name is so unoriginal and normal lol there is no way to mispronounce it.

  • my maiden name was Arabic, lots of vowels, but fairly easy to figure out how to pronounce. I often for searched at airports with my first and last name because it's sounds like a native Arabic name. My married last name, Szucs, is a short and common Hungarian last name (like Smith in Hungarian) but is often pronounced "Sucks", in fact H got teased in high school with that: they called him Nick Sucks. It's supposed to be pronounced "Sootch". I feel like I downgraded on the last name lol
