Sunscreen

I was a little late this year getting sunscreen and ended up grabbing a few different bottles of what I thought were the least "damaging" but best protecting sunscreen this weekend for the pool.  Turns out they are all crap according to various sites that outline all the bad things in sunscreen.  So let me know what you use that won't cause us all to get cancer while we are trying to prevent cancer X( & hopefully its not $20 for a .02 ounce tube!

Re: Sunscreen

  • i have no idea what chemicals they use, but we usually buy blue lizard brand or CeraVe because of EJ's sensitive skin! I love those little sticks that look like mini-deoderants for our faces. It is clearly using zinc oxide because of the whiteness it leaves behind (we have the cerave kind)
  • Our regular sunscreen is a bit annoying because you can only get it by mail order, so now is the time of year I’m ordering several every month. It is the sunscreen from Melaleuca.

Basically, what you want to look for is a sunscreen that has a physical barrier instead of a chemical barrier. Any sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide is going to provide the physical barrier and cause the UV rays to reflect instead of being absorbed by your skin.

Before our current brand we used Badger, Jason’s, and/or California Baby. I bought them at Whole Foods, but I’m sure you can find their elsewhere, too.

I bought blue lizard last year and liked it but read further and it got bad reviews for the chemicals in it.  Also just bought CeraVe for me and used it on the kids yesterday. I may keep that.  Crazy trying to keep it all straight!

  • Our pediatric dermatologist gave me a coupon for Aveeno natural protection baby, but I haven't been able to find it yet.  Last year we used Banana Boat natural reflect for kids.  I guess the key is zinc based formula.  I also got a stick (looks like a glue stick)  that is baby blankets brand.  It's call kids faces - zinc oxide formula.

  • Oh lovely, something else for us to worry about?!

I just bought two Banana Boat sunscreen sprays at Target ($6.99ea, buy 2 get a $5 gift card) and used a $3 manufacturer's coupon as well. Now I guess I should see what it's going to do to keep us safe or get us ill?

I have a CVS brand cream to use on the face (the sprays are no good for the kids' faces as they're squeamish about it, and I don't blame them). We were getting sunburn back in late January down here, so I'm trying to be hypervigilant on keeping everyone protected.

I use the Aveeno Baby on Sean - I found it at Target last summer, lala, if that helps?

Yea I know, I was/am a big Aveeno Baby user on Eamon b/c he has sensitive skin & seemed to do ok but now I'm leary after reading more on the ingredients (oxybenzone, parabens).  I sucked it up and bought the badger products yesterday.

The aveeno natural protection baby is a zinc based (different than regular aveeno baby).  I'm sure that badger products are still more pure though.

  • good to know , thanks - will check what I bought at home
