Staying Home

After many LONG discussions, H and I came to the decision last night that I will stay home, or possibly work part time, if it will work.

We couldn't come up with a plan that we are comfortable with, no matter how flexible our hours/jobs would be- that didn't include day care of some sort, and financially, that doesn't make sense for 2.

So. I get to stay home. Which is something I always dreamed I would have the opportunity to do.

So I am excited!

But I really didn't think this was the decision that would be made, so when my boss asked if I was coming back, I told her that was our plan (and it was).

Now I have to tell her I was wrong. Ugh.

I am dreading this conversation. I've only been here a year, and I feel awful about the timing of it all.

Any tips? I don't even know when I should have this conversation. I hate to let her continue on thinking I will be coming back and she just needs a temporary replacement, but I have a feeling things will be very awkward after I tell her- like the world's longest 2 week notice.

Re: Staying Home

  • I can understand being hesitant and feeling guilty. Is your job the type that might require more than the standard two weeks notice to replace you? I'm not saying wait until two weeks before you plan to stop working, but if your job isn't highly specialized, I don't see why they'd need to know right away.

I'd just approach them later on and tell them your original intent was to continue working but after reevaluating you've decided to stay home.

  • I went back part time after W was born and I kinda dragged out telling my boss. He's really easy going, but I felt like I was letting him down by not coming back full time. I told him when I was 8 months pregnant that I was going to change my schedule, which was probably later than I should have brought it up.

With twins, though, the cost of daycare is going to be a lot, so just be honest with them and let them know that you had intended on coming back, but once you sat down and evaluated things, it would just be best for you to stay home. I'm sure they'll be understanding.

  • I wouldn't necessarily describe the positiony specialized' but I am the 'payroll manager' and the only payroll person in the company. They would need me to train the person who replaces me, since no one else really knows how to do it all. Some people know pieces, but in general, it's all me.

I definitely want to give them enough notice to replace me, and for me to train the person.

It took about a month for me to get hired (umpteen interviews) and then I had a week and a half to train. So I would imagine they would have the same timeline this time around.

Would it be crazy to wait then until 2 and a half months prior? Maybe mid-august? Unless she asks me flat out again, as she has been.

  • With twins, there is a greater chance of delivering early, so I'd give her a bit more notice, especially given how long it took them to hire and train you.

  • Thank you. :) I know I am probably over thinking this- I just feel awful, and want to take care of them, while also taking care of us.

I agree with Lizzie. I'd give them more advanced notice than otherwise because of the high chance of going early with twins. Good luck!

  • Thanks :) I am also nervous about the financial aspect, but I know we will make it work.

Our lifestyle will certainly change, but it will be worth it in the end :)

  • We didn't decide until I was home on leave. I told them one week before I was due to return. I just told them that we had decided that it was what was best for our family.
Thanks to our wonderful RE our family is complete!

I would be hesitant to give my notice any sooner than I needed to.  You never know what might change.  I would also be in the camp 'do it while on ML' unless you'll have to pay back leave benefits.
