Where do you buy furniture?

Hey guys,

Does anyone know of any stores that sell decent quality furniture at a decent price? DH and I just went out and bought a Sleep Number mattress and now DH is trying to convince me that we should buy a new bed too so that we just replace everything at once. Truth be told our old bed frame really does need to be replaced (after 4 moves across the country it is cracked and barely being held together and it shows).

Currently the bed we have has a bookshelf as a headboard and lots of drawers underneath, which we use instead of a dresser and side tables, so if we get rid of this one and buy a different bed I will probably be looking at buying a dresser and tables as well to make up for the lack of storage. The thing is because we just spent a ton of money on the new mattress I really don't want to spend a ton on furniture now too (and of course I have champagne tastes on a beer budget! lol).

So far I've been hitting up some local thrift stores and Craigslist (found a few items we liked, but haven't been able to get a response back about any of them) and the furniture stores that I've seen nearby seem to be a bit on the pricey side. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas on stores or websites to check out that might have some good deals.

Thanks for any suggestions!

You're in the metro Atlanta area correct?

If you're willing to drive a bit, there's a huge discount furniture place in Chattanooga that's awesome.  It's right after the 75/24 split (on 24, heading toward Downtown Chatt/Nashville).  They're only open Friday-Monday (I think).

I honestly can't remember the name of it - it's something really generic like "Factory Furniture Liquidators" and they probably don't have a website.  But it's this massive warehouse that you can see from the interstate, and they have some great deals.  My bedroom set (2 dressers, mirror, side table, and queen sleigh bed) cost something like $800 total.  The tall dresser was actually only $50 because there was a crack in the back that my dad was able to repair.  It's a beautiful set - I've had it for the last 5 years, and it's worn pretty well.

There are also some places in Dalton to check out.  That's where pretty much all of the world's carpet/flooring is made, and they used to have just store after store of furniture too all on the same exit.  If you head toward Chattanooga, you hit Dalton first - and you can't possibly miss that exit.  It's got so many flooring stores that it's comedic.  Anyway, it used to be that you could get some pretty solid deals in the back warehouses of the furniture places.  New stuff, just discontinued for the most part.  It's been a long time since I've looked there, but it might be worth googling to see if anything sounds promising. There also used to be a Lazy Boy store in Dalton that had this sales guy who would do something like a 5% markup on their cost, and that was it.  My parents bought a bunch of recliners from him over the years for literally a fraction of the price of other places.  No idea how he stayed in business (or if he's still in business), but there you go.

As for the Atlanta area, I'm really no help.  My family always found Chattanooga/Dalton to be significantly cheaper than Atlanta, unless you're willing to go the IKEA route.

Do you have a Roomplace/Harlem Furniture around you? I got a bedset from there that lasted me 7 years. It still looked great and held up great, the only problem was the wooden slats holding the mattress and box spring up couldn't handle DH flopping down on it constantly. Probably would've been an easy fix but we wanted a set with drawers underneath so we replaced it.

  • I'm not sure if you have any of these stores near you but

    We buy furniture from:

Ikea (beginners furniture, wouldnt really reccomend as good quality stuff)

    Target

    Macy's

    JC Penny's

    Bobs Discount Furniture

    Pilgrim or Puritan Furniture

  • Thanks for all the suggestions everyone, I'm going to do a search for the places you all mentioned when I have a spare moment later today (haven't heard of Pilgrim or Puritan Furniture or Roomplace, but maybe they have stores nearby!). Hopefully we can find something, although I'm at the point that I might just get a metal frame for the time being and wait a few months until I can find something that is solid and holds up well (DH doesn't seem to like that plan though. He is an instant gratification kind of guy, lol).

@AprilH81 I rarely find stuff on Craigslist either, and was surprised that there were several bedroom sets posted within the last week or so that I liked. It's unfortunate that no one wants to respond to emails or texts though (even if it was just to say that the item was gone.) Oh well.

@hoffse, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought furniture here was expensive (I had sticker shock thinking about how much more things cost here than in Colorado!). It wouldn't be too hard to check out some of the places you mentioned and one of my girlfriends has been wanting to take a drive up that way so maybe we'll go take a mini-road trip up north.

Thanks again for all suggestions guys! It's appreciated  :)
  • Another vote for IKEA. All of our dressers are from IKEA. They aren't anything fancy but if you put them together correctly, they will hold up well.
  • I have had some good luck with furniture from Crate and Barrel. Some stuff is better priced than others. Make sure to sign up for their e-mails as to when they have sales. We bought our dining room table when they were having a 15% off everything in the store sale.

It's a place that tries to unload furniture and other décor items from other stores. Things are marked down up to 70% off. So far we have bought décor items, a rug, throw pillows and 2 arm chairs from there and LOVE it. They arm chairs were $600 chairs that we got for $192 each.

    They sell bedroom stuff too.
