International cell phone?

We are traveling to Cancun next month and I would like to have a cell phone so that we can be reached if there is an emergency with our kids.  I saw many places online where we can rent a phone that will pick up service down there - anyone have a recommendation for a company you have actually used?  tia!

  •  We had our AT&T & T-mobile cell phones un locked (so we could put a new sim card in them) then bought pre paid sim card & calling card down there to use. It was very inexpensive & worked good. I think "TelCell" was the company of the sim card/ calling card we purchased in Mexico.
  • We just used our phone - no new sim card no., nuthin' LOL.  We called the kennel often to check on our dog, talked with our parents quite a bit and the bill wasn't noticibly higher.  Being able to use our phone saved us some hassle too.
  • If you have a tri- or quad-band phone with a SIM card you can just call your carrier and get them to unlock it. Then once you arrive you can get a SIM and buy some minutes--you can probably even get the chip at the airport, they're sold EVERYWHERE.

Alternatively, if you don't have a phone with these capabilitie (say, you have an iphone or something)  you can just buy a cheap handset, SIM and load it with minutes as necessary. Shouldn't be more than $50, and then you can use the phone for future travel to the rest of the world where SIM cards are used.
