Can we talk about blogs for a minute...

What kinds of things do you look for in a good blog? What are your blog pet peeves (as a blogger or a reader)?

Re: Can we talk about blogs for a minute...

  • 1. I need great organization on a blog. I don't want to click 5 things to read your most recent post.

    2. If you add a link, please have it so clicking on it opens you up in a new window, it drives me nuts when I click on something then have to click the back button 50 times to get back or type in the blog again...

    3. PICTURES! I love them, I do but 25 pictures of the SAME food at different angles is A BIT excessive and annoying as heck!

  • In terms of book blogs specifically, but I guess also some of the lifestyle of home blogs as well, I'll unfollow if all you do is post promos.  I HATE book blitz, cover reveals, canned interviews, etc.

Another pet peeve is when I have to click through to read your actual post.  I usually unfollow blogs that don't include their full post in my reader feed and I definitely unfollow if I have to click from my feeder to your blog and then from your blog into the full article.

I don't read blogs too much anymore unless people link to posts on FB or Twitter. I also get annoyed if everything is promo (though I do enjoy cover reveals), but I since I only go to blogs when a FB or Twitter post interests me, I tend to see very little of that. Other things that turn me off are when music or videos play in the background or if the background is dark with light text and really hard to read.

A good blog for me has content that's relevant to my interests, has a unique point of view (giving a new take on a topic rather than recycling the same old thing everyone says) , and is clean and easy to read.

  • I agree about the 10000 pictures of the same food, already plated.  If you want to show me the process, fine.  However, I don't need to see the same thing repeated.

I see the need for advertizing, but it should be clean.

I realize that design is a bit subjective, but if everything is white, crap tons of links and half hidden posts as @julie37619 mentions, I just quit reading. Content isn't worth reading to me if it hurts my eyes.

  • I don't follow any blogs (although I'm looking at Julie's now). Any recommendations?
