Traveling across country

I wasn't sure where to post this so I hope I've gotten the right place. In a few weeks I am moving basically from one coast of the US to the other. This will be my first big move. Does anyone have a tried and true method on how to pack and keep everything clean and organized?

Space bags - especially for clothing, bedding, and linens. This will save you a ton of space, and keep things together and organized. In terms of other things, if you know where you will be moving, make sure to label your boxes with the room that they should be moved in to. Also, write down the contents of the box on a piece of paper and tape it to the side, or use a numbering system and number your boxes and then have a key that lists the contents that you can refer to. This will save you from opening every box later to try to find that thing you need.

Invest in a mattress bag, because moving trucks are notoriously dirty and gross, and you don't want all that dirt and grime on your mattress, even if you have a cover.

The last thing you'll want to do when you get to your new place is a load of laundry, so make sure that you have your clothes clean before you move. You'll obviously arrive to your new place with some dirty clothes - the ones you wore during transit - but that will be easy to throw in the hamper and wait out instead of needing to do laundry as soon as your arrive.

If you are concerned about drawers of bureaus or cabinet doors opening during transit, don't tape them closed, but use saran wrap and wrap the piece of furniture. Since it sticks to itself, it won't damage your pieces. You can also use saran wrap to wrap cooking utensils and pots and pans for stacking so they don't scratch each other, and it's also cleaner than using packing paper, so you won't need to wash all your kitchen items again before you use them at your new place.

Keep all of your cleaning supplies handy, and if you have time when you arrive at your new place, go in with those supplies before you start moving things and do a quick clean: wipe down the inside of cabinets, countertops, vacuum floors, bleach sinks, tubs, and showers, and clean toilets. Those will be the most important things you'll want to clean, especially since you'll likely be using those from day one. Once you get your belongings in, you can always do a deeper clean where you wash down window sills, baseboards, windows, the inside of appliances, etc.

Make sure that your mattress and a set of sheets, and a towel and bath supplies are the last items to make it on the moving truck. Even if you end up with time to unpack the truck before you need to catch up on some sleep, having the mattress accessible with sheets will be so nice after spending hours and hours in a car. If you arrive to your new location later than expected, you'll at least want to get those things off of the truck (even if you have to sleep on the floor in the living room!) so you can shower then sleep comfortably on your own mattress.
  • Definitely agree with AprilH81 about a plastic tote with cleaning supplies and tools. Also, purge, purge, purge before you move. My husband and I are going to be moving in about 6 months and this weekend, I'm going to start cleaning out the closets and tossing/selling things we don't use.
