WIJFR: Confessions of a Sociopath

I am not usually one to dislike a memoir because the author is so awful (Eat, Pray, Love and Wild being the only exceptions that come to mind) but man, this one was rough.

I've always been really interested in how the brain works and how other people experience emotion, because that is just a hard thing to put words around. This anonymous author tried to do this, as a sociopath who admittedly doesn't experience much emotion, and I feel like it just kind of didn't work. The whole thing came off as a strange brag (which makes sense because she is a sociopath :) ) but there was no balance to it. I have read other books about sociopaths (The Psychopath Test most recently) and felt like at least there there was some sense of balance. I almost felt like the author wanted people to walk away wishing that they were sociopaths.

I saw that this was marked by several people on GR as TBR and I just wanted to say that I can't really recommend it and even though it was only 300 pages, it was kind of a chore to read.

  • I think I gave up on this one about 25 pages in for the same reasons.  It just wasn't a fun or compelling read.

  • I'm with @julie37619‌ I didn't make it very far into this one. Bravo to anyone who finished it.

You know what you should try, jacki?  When Rabbit Howls by Truddi Chase.  It's actually a look into multiple personality disorder.  Supposedly, it's written by the other personalities but I'm not sure I buy that.  It's a fascinating read though.
