Does anyone know what a big box store does with your old appliances when they deliver new ones and take away the old ones (if they are in good operating order)?

Re: New Appliances question

  • No idea, mine are usually broken when they get replaced.
  • I would say they probably scrap them. I have never replaced working appliances, I run mine until death.

Same here, or if they are working I've sold them on craigslist.

We are fixing up our kitchen. The current appliances are probably 20+ years old and basic builder grade, so we are upgrading to new mid-grade appliances. We ordered them and I started to wonder what happens to them, if they get scrapped that seems wasteful. Egpitt22 Did you meet the buyer somewhere? We don't have a truck and it makes me a little nervous to have someone come to your house.
  • A quick google search says that they often sell them to a used appliance store for $10-$50. Some will resell them.

My sister replaced her range when they moved into their house. They were having work done and one of the workers bought it from them.

There is a used appliance store in Millvale called Washers & More they may take them and resell. They are right on Grant, near the french bakery and the record store.

Thanks Kris. Well I would much rather donate them to Habitat than have the store we bought them from make even a small profit, that irks me. Maybe we will also think about ways we could sell them ourselves.
  • When we replaced our range a few years ago I put our old one on Craigslist in the free section. It was sobering to see how many people desperately wanted our 30 year old oven. My husband put it on our porch and we told the people to come pick it up when they could. That way no strangers would come into our home. I did go out and talk to the people when they showed up and they were so appreciative. They said their current oven didn't close properly so this would be a big upgrade for them. So that made me feel good that someone could use it rather than it sitting in a landfill.

We sold ours on CL when we remodeled our kitchen. Everything worked but wasn't anything fantastic. We just had people come to our house. I don't love that but we have done it for a few things with good results. I screen the CL responses so it's not just every single person!

One guy stopped by and wanted pretty much everything. Worked out perfect and made a little money. He was one of the first people to look at stuff so it was easy!We ended up just sitting the dishwasher by the curb and it was picked up pretty quickly by somebody.

we sold our washer/dryer (we had brought our old ones from our other house, but the new house had a gas line instead of electric) we stored them in our garage so they wouldn't be in our home and I only let someone come when Brian was home.  Fortunately, the first person to contact me bought them the next day, he was a landlord and needed them for a rental property.
