Career Counselor/Professional Resume Reviewer?
A few weeks ago, I learned that our department will be laid off in late September. I have always been up to date with my resume, however I haven't been in the job search market for 6 years. I'd like to get some career advice and professional resume advice from someone in the Pittsburgh area.
Does anyone have recommendations?

Jewish Family & Children's Services offers great mid-career/career changer services: http://www.jfcspgh.org/career-services.aspx
I'm not sure what kind of work you do, but I work in career services at a grad school and would be happy to look over your resume as long as it's not in a technical field or anything that I have no experience with
Jake - 1.15.08
Liam - 5.17.11
I'm sorry to hear that!
Will you get any type severance package? Sometimes the package will include outplacement services to help with the transition.
This is the second time I am hearing about Jewish Family & Children's Services offers great mid-career/career changer services (Career Development Center). I will have to check them out.
My current field is pretty niche; however I am open to a new career path.
We were offered a severance package, however career advisory services start upon our laid off date. IMO I think this service should start now rather than later, thus the reason I am looking for services on my own.
I will have to check into both CCAC and SRU for their alumni services.
They don't want you bailing before your end date! That's nice that they gave you warning, though, and a severance package. As someone who was laid off at 8 months pregnant and was given a week's notice (though I could leave that day if I chose) and only 2 weeks severance... it would have been nice to know ahead of time.
I think the others have given you great advice. I did not know about the Jewish Family Center, but I know someone who runs the Women's programs there and they do fantastic work. I was also going to suggest your college, however I sometimes think they tend to be out of touch with the more advanced employee, versus "fresh out of college".
Definitely get on LinkedIn and, once your resume is up to speed, get on sites such as Monster, etc. And start talking to anyone you know - networking and word of mouth do wonders for job searching.
Best of luck - remember that everything happens for a reason; I hope this opens big new doors for you!
My three sons!
LinkedIn and Indeed have been my "go to" places for the job search thus far. When I was job seraching 6 years ago, it seemed Monster was the place to go. Indeed is very easy to use and LinkedIn let's me network with folks that I've worked with in the past and establish new connections with clients.
Thanks ladies for all your advice and support so far!!
